Google's search algorithm

Having a great looking, and working, website is just half the battle. A very important part, but only part. Having a great looking website with fresh and relevant content is a much better place to be.

Google is like any other business in that it tries to serve it's "clients" (search users) with the most relevant and fitting product (the search results). To do so, Google tries to determine the relevance of content to a search term, the freshness of that content (and certain topics require a greater freshness to be relevant; topics that are historical require less freshness than a report on a fire in a local store), and the authority of the website and/or the author.

How you can help your own website

Blogging is one of the easiest and simplest ways to provide Google with the fresh content they're looking for. Many clients are concerned that they don't know how to blog, or what to blog about, and that's understandable. Others wonder if they have enough content to write a blog post every day or every week.

The important thing is to make a start. Even if that's just once a month. We can install a friendly, easy to use blogging tool on your site to get your started. Topics can be about your business (sparingly), your industry, even a family holiday or event. Blogging is for informing customers and potential customers, but also to show them that you're just a regular guy or girl making their way in the world. Regular blogging (especially coupled with a newsletter) also brings returning and fresh traffic to your site - another Google ranking signal.

Spotlight on business

While talking about good content and blogging, it's a good moment to introduce someone we use when we need social media posting help, Amanda Collins, of Grammar Doctors. I met Amanda at a BNI-sponsored event where she talked about using LinkedIn more effectively. It was such an eye-opener, and I have used many of her techniques on LinkedIn with great success.
