"We're contacting you about your tax fraud..."
Not the words we want to be hearing on a Monday morning (or at any time of any day for that matter!!) Recently I've been spammed by these calls from Washing area code 202. The bottom line is this - the IRS does NOT phone you to collect money.
So what do you do when you receive one of these calls?
1. Just hang up. You're not going to be annoying the IRS, just being another rejection to some random Indian scammer (all my calls bar one were answered by Indians with thick accents).
2. Hurl abuse at them, then hang up!
3. My favorite... we all spend time in the car. Not much to do. Want to give yourself some entertainment? Phone them back. Again, and again, and again! The challenge is to see how long you can keep them on the call. While you're engaging them, they're not trying to scam someone else.
But, again, bottom line, the IRS do not phone you trying to collect money. Nor will they email you either (another IRS scam doing the rounds). They will only write, and I hope you never get one of those unless it's enclosing a check!
