Are smartphones making us less smart?
A study conducted in 2015 by the Journal of Experimental Psychology, and followed up by Adrian Ward, a cognitive psychologist, and marketing professor at the University of Texas at Austin found that smartphones definitely interrupt us, our work and our mental abilities.
The studies show an elevated heart rate and blood pressure, along with a decline in problem-solving skills; even if subjects did not interact with their phone! So even ignoring the phone does not help.
The frightening thing is that we allow our children, even kindergarten age, to go to school with these devices, with reasons like "So we can stay in contact". all the while setting our children up to be distracted. I know I've used that reason. Perhaps it's time we turned off our phones a bit more.and cut back on the 30,000 times we'll interact with them this year.
