The hype of the drought may have subsided but the underlying conditions have not changed. So what more can we do? Join the LA Collaborative for a deep dive into water efficient and sustainable landscape architecture with legacy Collaborative leader, Gary Lai.
Learning Objectives:
  • We get our landscape aesthetics from a very specific source- Western Europe and their vision of the garden of eden.  We can and have changed tastes to suite practical needs.
  • American, and more specifically Californian, landscape aesthetic tastes have origins in England and other western European estate design.  We need to understand that this aesthetic is a matter of taste and tradition, not a mandate or requirement.
  • California‚Äôs water supply system is overly complex and vastly inefficient but, ultimately, a limited resource.  We forget that water is an absolute essential element for life.
  • Our current standards for landscape design, irrigation and maintenance is extremely inefficient.  With just moderate adjustments, we can save millions of gallons of water.  If we embrace our local climate and landscape aesthetics we can save hundreds of millions of gallons without large infrastructure investments.
  • The power to change is within ourselves.  If we change our attitude and see water as an essential resource, we will be able to solve our water supply problems even under the stresses of population growth and climate change.
