Ministry Trips: Impact
Every second year student at UBI is required to participate in a ministry trip for the purpose of practical ministry experience. In the month of June, one of our trips embarked to our very own city, Pietermaritzburg, to be involved with “the least among us.” Led by lecturers Ben Barthelemy and Nokuthula Tshazi, this trip worked among streets kids with Youth for Christ, led Bible clubs for children, participated in a prayer walk in the community of Northdale, and spent time with one of our own staff and her family at a hospital.
Part of the vision of this trip was for UBI to be a blessing to its community and develop partnerships with local ministries. Acts 1:8 says, “…you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Pietermaritzburg is UBI’s Jerusalem. Jeremiah writes, “…seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper” (29:7). Even though this was written at a specific time in history to the people of Israel, it is still applicable today. Another way to express it would be “love your neighbor as yourself.”
It was a privilege for UBI to send a ministry trip into our own city, and we trust that the Lord used it to grow the students and faculty involved as well as minister to others in Pietermaritzburg.
Please pray for the upcoming trips in September: two teams will head to Gauteng and one to Cape Town.
