JULY 2018

From the Principal's Desk

We are over halfway into 2018. We started the year with an expectation of blessings from our heavenly Father. Today, we can stand and look back on the past five months and say that indeed the Lord has been with us. The 2018 academic year started with an unusual low number of first year students. But because we know that our Lord is always in control of our lives, we did not worry ourselves about this situation. We trusted the Lord to take care of all our needs and continued with the job set before us. The first term went well and all our needs were met by the Lord.

When the second term started, the Lord sent to us a few more students and we are grateful to the Lord for them. The total number of first year students to date is twenty-one (21). At the end of the second term we had sixty-eight (68) registered full-time students.

The students finished writing their second term exams on June 12th and are now on holiday until July 16th. A group of second year students started their one week practical ministry on June 12th. Three other groups will be doing their practical ministry duties in Cape Town and Gauteng during the September break. Please pray that God will use these ministries to touch the lives of many people.

There has been wide interest from our constituencies in studying God’s Word by distance learning. The UBI faculty is busy with the preparations towards the realization of this dream. Please join us in praying that the Lord will open the door for this need to be met by 2019 or 2020. It is our desire that as many people as possible be equipped with God’s Word.

We are expecting a good number of students who will be joining the Winter School on our premises from July 2nd for two weeks. Our prayer is that even people who are not full time students at UBI will get an opportunity to be equipped to serve the Lord better. We shall continue to appreciate your prayers for as long as the Lord still allows us to serve Him.

Yours in Christ,
George Mnisi

Ministry Trips: Impact

Every second year student at UBI is required to participate in a ministry trip for the purpose of practical ministry experience. In the month of June, one of our trips embarked to our very own city, Pietermaritzburg, to be involved with “the least among us.” Led by lecturers Ben Barthelemy and Nokuthula Tshazi, this trip worked among streets kids with Youth for Christ, led Bible clubs for children, participated in a prayer walk in the community of Northdale, and spent time with one of our own staff and her family at a hospital.

Part of the vision of this trip was for UBI to be a blessing to its community and develop partnerships with local ministries. Acts 1:8 says, “…you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Pietermaritzburg is UBI’s Jerusalem. Jeremiah writes, “…seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper” (29:7). Even though this was written at a specific time in history to the people of Israel, it is still applicable today. Another way to express it would be “love your neighbor as yourself.”

It was a privilege for UBI to send a ministry trip into our own city, and we trust that the Lord used it to grow the students and faculty involved as well as minister to others in Pietermaritzburg.

Please pray for the upcoming trips in September: two teams will head to Gauteng and one to Cape Town.

Distance Learning Focus

There have been requests for several years for UBI to offer distance learning courses for those who cannot study on the campus in Pietermaritzburg. While UBI has slowly been working towards offering a distance learning program for a couple of years, we are thankful for Dr. Karen Leonard, who has come from Olivet Nazarene University in the US. She has dedicated two months to spend here at UBI in an effort to help to get the distance learning program off the ground. She led a workshop for lecturers at the end of second term, introducing a template for courses and giving practical help, and continues to offer her assistance and expertise.
