ECSAT NEWSLETTER JUNE 2017

Senior Citizen's Club
A Senior Citizen’s Club is an initiative started by Roshan, our Programme Director on his return from America.  Twenty men and women attend meetings every fortnight at Galle Centre.  Here, Mr Darmadasa receives a tricycle which he can use as a lottery ticket seller.  Five wheelchairs, five tricycles and two elbow crutches were donated by Disability Organisation Joint Front.
Thanks to Disability Organisation Joint Front

Art & Craft Exhibition
On February 28th ECSAT held an Art & Craft Exhibition at the Pavilion of the International Cricket Ground in Galle.  It was opened by the District Secretariat of Galle and over 1000 members of the public visited. Craft items made by beneficiaries were on display and handicrafts made by the Vocational Training group were for sale.  They took over 30,000/- (£150) selling at local prices.  Children made group collages and entertained people with a dancing display.  They gave demonstrations of sewing with a treadle machine, necklace making and fabric painting.

Therapy Bed
We received a donation from a trustee of Friends of ECSAT for a new therapy bed.  Here, Nishara is receiving the first treatment on the new bed at the correct height for the therapist.
Thanks to David Searle

Overnight Stay at Kataragama
On March 16th and 17th, ten women from Bonavista, a home for women with intellectual impairment, had an overnight stay at Kataragama. They were accompanied by eight staff. This was a first time experience for the women.  They visited the temple complex, a safari park, ate in self-service restaurants and stayed at a hotel.  Throughout the visit, the women were smiling and said they had never been so happy before.

News from our Education Classes
Our classes for Pre-school, One-to-One support, School Preparation and After School continue daily at Galle, Matara, Hikkaduwa and Dorape Centres.  All have waiting lists which we are seeking to reduce through grants of extra funding.  Here, children are enjoying the new round-about at Galle Centre.

Pants for Australia
We shipped an order of new style tie-dye pants to our Australian outlet run by a previous volunteer.  Our handicrafts are available on line and at our Galle Centre.  We are researching outlets in America and UK.
Thanks to Maddy

ECSAT Celebrates its 12th Birthday!
ECSAT was 12 years old on April 1st.  ECSAT celebrated by holding a Medical Camp to promote the health of children and parents.  The Blood Bank at Karapitiya Hospital, Hemas Hospital and the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) gave their permission for the Medical Camp and set up clinics at ECSAT Community Centre from 8.30am to 3 pm.

Thirty people donated blood supported by a staff of 02 doctors, 05 nurses and 04 helpers from Karapitiya Hospital.  One person gave blood for the first time.  The Hemas Hospital Clinic was staffed by 02 doctors, 04 nurses and 01 pharmacist.  People were checked for diabetes and blood pressure and some people received free medicines.  The MOH clinic was staffed by 02 doctors and 05 midwives and thirty people were checked for height, weight, blood pressure and diabetes. Also staff gave advice about health issues. Nineteen women aged between 33 and 37 years took a PAP test for cervical cancer.  Two women tested positive.
A big THANK-YOU...
