Welcome to the June Issue

The office continues to be very busy with a wide variety of queries on all our areas of activity, plus new codings and renewals, tonnage measurements, VAT, RCD and customs warehouse movements.

The Practical Brokerage course in May had 15 delegates and the ABYA Annual Conference delegates looked at a variety of legal issues relating to Due Diligence, Money Laundering, Commission referral fees and Selling in the course of a business. On a lighter note Boatshop 24 gave a presentation on the value of using Social Media within a business.

The surveyors’ training earlier in May covered a variety of topics including thermal imaging cameras, formatting reports (everyone thought they knew until Derek started his presentation …) and an update on MLC.

The Small Craft Surveyors Forum held its annual seminar at the Seawork Exhibition last week looking at the revised Workboat Code – there is a short report later in this newsletter. We had a stand to fly the ABYA and YDSA flags at the exhibition using our new-look advertising focussing on the logos with the simple message – “Qualified Experienced Professionals since 1912”. Do remember to include the logos in any advertising, stationery, etc. It all helps with raising the profile of the associations.

You should all now have received your membership renewal paperwork. Please let Kay know if you have not received it or have any queries. The subscription is a request for payment – we will issue a receipted invoice on payment, but doing it this way means we don’t have to pay all the VAT due in the first quarter of the year, before we receive the payments, nor do they appear as bad debts on the accounts. If you would like to pay quarterly, please let us know.

Finally, you all know that Tricia is retiring after a good many years at YBDSA looking after the accounts, which she has done very ably, and with great care in making savings wherever possible. Her final day is Thursday 26 June. Sue Dorking, who many of you will know from the CA side, has Sage qualifications and is moving over to take on the accounts. We are therefore seeking a new support person for the CA and Dawn and some additional help with the telephones, post, etc. Hopefully by the time you read this, we will have someone in view.

So, all change at the Glassworks! Our very best for the future to Tricia for a long and happy retirement.

Regards,

Jane

In Memoriam - Jean Pierre Cardin

Jean Pierre Cardin died on 17 May. He was known to us as one of the Oyster brokerage/sales team and had been an ABYA member since 2005.

He was always helpful and we were saddened to hear of his illness. We know he will be sadly missed by colleagues, friends and family and by us here at The Glass Works

Great Result from the FCA - All UK yacht brokers will have been pleased to learn that the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) have agreed with ABYA that yacht brokers do not need to be FCA registered either to set up a client account or to repay a marine mortgage on behalf of a client. This would otherwise have placed a heavy, and currently impossible, burden on yacht brokers as FCA does not have an option for yacht brokers to register for these activities! We are delighted that the FCA has reached this decision.

Members are reminded that they will still need to be FCA registered with a Consumer Credit Licence (CCL) if they will be receiving commissions from insurers or finance houses for introduction of clients.

If you wish to set up a new client account and the message has not yet reached your bank there is information in the members’ area of the website to assist you.
