Welcome to the November Issue

The clocks have changed and the first really big storm of the autumn has hit us, though fortunately without the catastrophic consequences of 1987. It is the season boat buying dies back and members can catch up on reports, filing, tax returns and other such items.
We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Training event on 18 November – there is a free morning so you can choose which exhibit you wish to see including the new Mary Rose Exhibition and then in the afternoon we have trainings for you in Action Stations! which is also in Portsmouth Dockyard.
There is a Members’ dinner on the Monday evening to which partners are welcome and then Tuesday is our AGMs. We have revised the Articles of Association in line with current practice and advice from solicitors as to how to achieve this. In 2014 we will look at the Codes of Practice to bring them up to date with any changes since they were last revised.
Thank you to all the Committee Members and particularly to the officers who do a lot of unseen work behind the scenes on behalf of the membership. This is a year when the Chairmen and President all change – so many thanks to those who are moving out of these jobs (but not out of the committees) and welcome to those moving into these positions.
I hope to see you on 18 and 19 November in Portsmouth!

YDSA is developing a new two-day course to support applicants for membership.  Entitled “Introduction to Surveying with the YDSA” it will be held alongside the twoday Brokers course so delegates can network during breaks.  Some of the speakers will present at both events.  The first day will look at the various aspects of surveying including legal issues and the second day will work on report writing, a key skill for the yacht surveyor. To be held at the Marwell Hotel, near Winchester. For more details about the course email Jane Gentry or call 01730 710 425

Nick Ryley
Nick has been a staunch supporter of ABYA and the YBDSA including becoming President. He stepped into the breach when Jane had to go into hospital and supported the staff during that period. He always has clear-sighted suggestions to make on how to accomplish tasks and although he has stepped down as Brokerage Director at Ancasta he is remaining on the board, so he won’t be disappearing just yet.

Paul Mudie
Many members will remember Paul for his pink beard! Paul was an inland waterways broker and a character! Paul sat on the ABYA committee for some years and like Nick, always had ideas on how to achieve tasks that faced the committee. He will be missed on the inland waterways, but the little Scottish village where he is buying a stone cottage that needs restoration (a lot of it!) will no doubt embrace Paul and Debbie. Paul is retiring from ABNB Narrowboats.
