Welcome to the June issue

This is the busiest season for you all – lots going on and lots for us to do to provide certificates, advice, information, etc. Boat buying patterns are all over the place – brokers are experiencing very different levels of activity and good listings are difficult to come by.

If you have a project you would like to share with other Members in the newsletter, do send us in some information and a photograph.

We have a stand – SB7 - at Seawork (16-18 June) so come along and say hello, or use it as a meeting place – we are easy to find on the left aisle in the Small Business section. The Small Craft Surveyors Forum (IIMS, RINA, IMarEST, NI, SCMS and YDSA) is holding its annual seminar on the Wednesday afternoon with two speakers from RNLI – ‘Surveying by Condition based Maintenance’ and Simon Mockler from DNV on ‘Offshore Windfarm Support Vessels – class issues of design, propulsion and transfer to wind pylons’. All welcome to this free seminar, but please book for seating/catering purposes.

Another successful ABYA annual conference was held on 9 June and a report follows later in this this newsletter.

We are running two Marine Electrics one-day seminars, led by Keith Meadowcroft. One at The Glass Works (24 June) and the other at Alvechurch Boat Centre (29 September). The Practical Yacht Brokerage course runs at the end of June – just a couple of places left. The Steel Training day held here was very popular – thanks to Tony Tucker and Mark Lockie for leading the day.

I didn’t want to let it pass without noting that David Hopkins – “Hoppy” as we all know him – has decided to hang up his spike. He first became a Member in 1982 – 33 years ago. He remains as a Retired Member so we won’t lose sight of him! We wish him a happy retirement sailing his 1927 old gaffer ‘Chough’ after a long career in the marine industry and thank him for all his support of the association over the years.

In Memoriam
Members will be saddened to hear of the death of Ted Spears on 11 June.

Ted joined the YDSA as a surveyor in September 2002, following a long career building and designing boats. He was very proud of his latest design – the Spitfire 18 - which was exhibited at the Southampton and London Boat Shows.

We will remember Ted with a ready smile and always with time to assist and contribute, whether to committee work or to help another surveyor with a query. Each of us will have a special memory of Ted which we will hold in our hearts. Our love and best wishes go out to his wife Mary and family at this sad time.

The funeral will be on 3 July.  Please ask the YBDSA office for further details.

A Safety Alert was issued due to recent safety concerns discovered on vessels with fixed CO2 fire-fighting systems.

It is critical that operators of vessels with fixed CO2 systems are familiar with the operation of the systems; conduct periodic inspections of the systems for readiness, and know the signs for detecting when a discharge has occurred.

It is recommended that the appropriate crew members receive training on CO2 system operation and its basic components. Click here for the full PDF report from the USCG.
