Welcome to the December Issue
This is the last newsletter of what has been another busy year. Over 470 tonnage measurements and still a few left to go before the end of the year – getting back up to earlier years’ levels which is encouraging. Certifying Authority figures are holding up well with the total number of certificates issued this year at 1,436, an increase of approximately 40 on 2012. This includes 285 new vessel files.
The HMRC Customs Warehouse is a small but useful activity – since it was set up at the end of 2007, 77 boats have gone through. We are fortunate to have good relations with HMRC’s marine department and they are frequently more than helpful with queries on VAT, place of supply of goods and services, T2Ls for Portugal, etc... Sadly a change to the requirement for VAT evidence back to 1985 is not in sight – this would require a change of legislation at EU level.
Those of you who came to the AGM will know that our new Honorary Treasurer sounded a note of caution regarding the Association finances. We will be looking at every area of activity to see where we can make savings and/or increase revenue. There is a report on the AGMs later in the newsletter.
Some brokers are reporting an occasional upturn in business which we can only hope anticipates an improved experience in 2014. All committees underline the importance of maintaining high standards as members of ABYA, YDSA and the PCA. Don’t under-sell yourselves!
The rules for advertising using the ABYA and YDSA logos and letters by Graduate and Affiliate surveyors and Probationary brokers have been confirmed – if you are using either or both, or have invented some form of qualification (such as AffilYDSA) you are breaking the Association rules. If we see you doing this, you will immediately be removed from the website listing and we will write and ask you to put things right and show us when you have done so. If you are entitled to advertise and are using the old logo, please go to the Members' area of the websites to download the new logo. 2014 is the year when we really push profile and professionalism and use of the correct logo will help us with this on your behalf.
If you are exhibiting at London we hope the show goes well for you. Thank you all for your support of the Associations during 2013 and best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.
Jane and all the team at the Glass Works.
