The power of used cooking oil

RecOil, an EU initiative supported by the European Commission through the Intelligent Energy for Europe Programme, aims to increase sustainable biodiesel production and its local market intake by enhancing household used cooking oil collection and transformation.

Used cooking oil can become a problematic issue if not managed properly. Its inadequate disposal can result in harmful effects: it hinders sewage treatment, pollutes aquatic systems, blocks pipes and causes odors. One interesting and sustainable option for UCO management is its energy valorisation to biodiesel.
Biodiesel produced from UCO could meet about 1,5% of the EU’s diesel consumption, helping Member States to reach the target to incorporate 10% of renewable energy in transports in compliance with Directive 2009/28/CE, and reduce CO2 emissions by 20%, by 2020. Nevertheless, it is estimated that over 60% of the UCO produced is improperly disposed of. Read More.
