SPRING ART EXHIBITION OPENS THIS WEEKEND

Elizabeth Street Garden is delighted to present its its first art exhibition.

A Particular Kind of Solitude
Inspired by the Writings of Robert Walser
Curated by Serra Sabuncuoglu

A Particular Kind of Solitude is a site-specific exhibition engaging more than 50 artists, writers, readers, musicians, dancers and filmmakers responding to the observations and writings of Robert Walser. The early twentieth-century Swiss author has become something of a hero, or anti-hero for writers and artists over the last few decades. Much of his work and philosophies rest on the quiet magic and personal fulfillment of walking; the urban experience is full of such walks, and this is often how people discover Elizabeth Street Garden.

LAST WEEKEND: HISTORIC LITTLE ITALY WALKING TOUR

Last weekend, the Garden hosted a walk through historic Little Italy as part of The Municipal Art Society’s Jane's Walk NYC. Laurie Fabiano, author of Elizabeth Street, led the neighborhood walk based on her own family narrative and the immigrant experience at the turn of the last century. The weather was beautiful, and the tour was terrific! Thank you both to Laurie for sharing her family story and giving us a peek into the dynamic history of our neighborhood and to the volunteers who supported the walk, helping to make it a success.

If you were unable to attend and you would like to explore historic Little Italy with your friends and neighbors, the walk is available at lauriefabiano.com/pdf/Elizabeth_Street_Walking_Tour.pdf.
MAY IS LOWER EAST SIDE HISTORY MONTH

In celebration of Lower East Side History Month, the Garden joined other LES organizations, in collaboration with the Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space, and exhibited a Garden Clothesline illustrating the history of the site as a social and civic center for our community. The Clothesline will hang through the month of May. Please stop by, and check it out.

The Garden also served on Saturday as a "chalking station" for LES History Month's Chalk/LES project, encouraging people to chalk LES memories, associations, love....

For additional information about Lower East Side History Month and an event calendar, visit LES History Month.
