Sunday Fun: Show Our Neighborhood Street Trees Some Love

Come out and join us, bring the entire family and be a part of our neighborhood community service day.

Neighborhood Street Tree Care Day β€” Sunday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Together we will help clean up, mulch and water 150-plus beloved street trees surrounding Elizabeth Street Garden, including those in DeSalvio Playground. No experience necessary. All ages welcome

Meet in the Garden at 10 a.m. for coffee and bagels, and from there we will fan out in teams to tend our street trees.

If you are a resident, building owner, or local business who would like to help care for and "adopt" a tree in front of your building, please let us know by emailing friends@elizabethstreetgarden.org.

Thank You for Attending the LMDC Hearing!

Thank you to the more than 250 Garden supporters who attended the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) hearing on Sept. 17. The Friends of Elizabeth Street Garden crowds demonstrate the depth of passion and support from our local community to save Elizabeth Street Garden. Supporters filled the main hearing room, two overflow rooms and an outside terrace. Some were never even able to enter the building due to overwhelming attendance!

During the hearing, Friends of Elizabeth Street Garden submitted more than 1,500 letters of support for the Garden. We collected these letters in the two weeks prior to the hearing, both online and in the Garden β€” a testament to the significant number of visitors the Garden receives.

Thank you to Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick for requesting that LMDC deny the application to 21 Spring and that our community "be a part of conversations that involve the development of public spaces.”

Additionally, Friends of Elizabeth Street Garden is grateful for the support from parks and community organizations, including:

What’s Next? LMDC received more than 20 proposal for the $50 million in grant funds, and it will take some time to review the projects. As soon as we have more information, we will share it.

"Tumult in a Manhattan Oasis Over an Affordable Housing Plan"
by David W. Dunlap, Sept. 23, 2015

"Is it too much to hope that a city of limitless imagination can do better than force an either-or choice between desperately needed housing and imaginative open space?"

More Thank-You's: Living Soil Workshop, Movie Nights & Live Music Sunday

Soil Workshop
Thank you to New York City's leading soil expert James Sottilo and his colleague Samantha D'Amato from Ecological Landscape Management for conducting the Living Soil Workshop on Sept. 12. They not only taught us about the complexities of life in the soil, but also showed us with their microscope the life that keeps the Garden healthy.

Movie Nights
A special thank-you to volunteer Patricia Squillari for curating and producing this past season's popular Movie Nights. She and her steadfast volunteer team β€” Zev Fagin and Joseph Reiver β€” ensured the six screenings, each showcasing the ever-changing New York City street scene, were enjoyed by as many as 300 Movie Night attendees.

Live Music Sunday
Last but not least, thanks to John Lander and Catherine Lopez for performing in the Garden on Sept. 13.
