THANK YOU: NYC Summer Youth Employment Program Interns and LUNGS

Elizabeth Street Garden hosted 11 high school interns this week. LUNGS — Loisaida United Neighborhood Gardens, a collective of 41 community gardens in the East Village and Lower East Side, reached out to the Garden and asked us to participate with them in the City's Summer Youth Employment Program. The students, age 14 – 19, worked in more than 20 different gardens during their six-week program. At Elizabeth Street Garden, they weeded, cleaned out the storage shed, trimmed hedges, aerated the south lawn and shared their thoughts with McCann Worldgroup's Michelle Kiely on how teens might use the Garden. NYC Urban Park Rangers visited and talked with us about the benefits local bats provide. (Who knew bats can eat more than 600 mosquitoes per hour?)
We thank program interns Adanla, Anastasiya, Attina, Billy, Calvin, Kaitlyn, Kelly, Lily, Michelle, Rina, and Tai Wei; intern coordinator Sana Bando; and LUNGS founder Charles Krezell, for asking the Garden to participate.
