Hurricane Update & Relief Efforts
Our thoughts are with all impacted by the recent hurricanes. Our Maestras and closest collaborators in Cuba - Norma, Griselda, Blanca, Luisa and Alison - are all physically safe and seeing how to support others.

Irma was the strongest recorded storm to hit Cuba since 1931, making landfall in the northeastern provinces of Cuba, causing serious destruction from Guantanamo to Havana, and 10 tragic fatalities. The country is now in an active phase of recovery.

Since drafting this newsletter, Puerto Rico was hit by Hurricane Maria and a major earthquake hit Mexico City, Puebla & surrounding areas. We are in solidarity with all those who were impacted as we move into the hard work of recovery and recuperation.

May we continue to stay safe and care for each other.

To help relief efforts, we highly suggest supporting local grassroots efforts. For Cuba, the Global Links & MEDICC joint campaign: www.globalgiving.org/projects/hurricane-irma-recovery-in-cuba.

For Mexico, we suggest the TOPOS Rescue Brigade - even $5 will help! They can accept PayPal donations at: donativos@brigada-rescate-topos.org
International Literacy Month &

Hispanic Heritage Month
September is a month to celebrate Literacy and Latino Heritage!

International Literacy Day is September 8th and National Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 - October 15.

Placed at the intersection of these two important moments, we are happy announce that we will be donating the entire MAESTRA archive to the Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This is thanks to Dr Louis A Perez, Director of The Institute for the Study of the Americas, and Latin American and Latina/o Studies Librarian Dr. Teresa Chapa, and recent PhD graduate Ann Halbert-Brooks, who did much of her dissertation research in our unpublished archives & then created the wonderful inventory catalogue of interviews that we will gift to UNC along with tapes, transcripts & digitized materials. We are so delighted that this collection will be housed in a safe, permanent place for use by current & future scholars, activists and media-makers! Our launch event will take place on:

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28th @ 5pm in the Wilson Library at UNC-Chapel Hill. More details below... Come join us!
MAESTRA Archive Launch at UNC
The September 28th event will start with a screening of MAESTRA and a discussion with Catherine Murphy, Griselda Aguilera and Dr. Louis Perez.

Over the coming year, we will continue the process of digitizing the dozens of interviews collected while making MAESTRA. They will be housed at the The Rare Book Collection at UNC Wilson Library.

Our unpublished archive is perhaps the largest single archive of testimonies on the subject of off the island of Cuba. Once processed, we will give a full copy to a repository in Cuba, such as the Havana Literacy Museum.
