Welcome to the December edition of the HealthWest Update. 

This will be our last e-news for 2018 and I wish to thank you for being part of HealthWest Partnership this year. We all wish you a happy, safe and restful festive season.
Sadly HealthWest will farewell Martin Plowman on the 13 December. Martin has developed the Workforce Mutuality Standards with the support of an Expert Advisory Panel. The standards have been piloted and preliminary independent evaluation suggests that they are a useful resource to guide organisations in building their workforce mutuality (project update below). I wish to thank Martin for his passion and commitment to this exciting project, but also the collegiate support he provided to his fellow staff members. We wish him well as he moves on to other big adventures.

Review of Primary Care Partnerships in Victoria

HealthWest is one of 28 Primary Care Partnerships (PCPs) in Victoria. PCPs focus on building effective partnerships with the local community to improve health and wellbeing, especially for people experiencing vulnerability. Project Updates

Project Momentum: Preventing Violence against Women

Project Momentum provides young men at Victoria University with the opportunity to design and lead a small-scale community project to prevent violence against women. Men will work alongside a Women’s Accountability Panel, who will advise and support the men’s work. A campaign has begun at the University to engage and connect men to the project, as well as women who are interested in joining the panel.
Men involved in the project will be offered training and workshops on gender issues, types of violence, understanding prevention work and project management tips and strategies.

Men of Brimbank

Men of Brimbank have been successful in gaining two grants from Brimbank City Council: a Community Strengthening Grant and an Establishment Grant. These grants are assisting the group to become their own independent entity, as well as to plan several community events and activities for 2019.
The group attended the Sydenham Kite Festival on 2 December 2018, supporting families with donated kites and aiming to engage men and dads with the invitation to lead change and support gender equity.

Completion of first stage of HealthWest’s Workforce Mutuality project

The first stage of HealthWest Partnership’s Workforce Mutuality project is now complete, the culmination of over two years of work from HealthWest and our partners.
Highlights from the project have included
  • the introduction of the new concept of ‘workforce mutuality’,
  • the creation of a world-first set of Standards for Workforce Mutuality, and
  • the successful piloting of the Standards.
Workforce mutuality
... is the extent to which the diversity of the community is reflected in the workforce of an organisation or a particular sector.

Piloting the Standards
HealthWest recently piloted the Standards with five of our members organisations: Bolton Clarke, cohealth, commUnity+, IPC Health and Tweddle Child and Family Service. The pilot was overwhelmingly positive, with the Standards determined to be fit for purpose, effectiveness and feasible for self-assessment.
Pilot organisations highlighted how easy it was to pick up and use the Standards straightaway, as well as the potential for the Standards to make an impact in other sectors such as the government and corporate sectors. Most impressively of all, members of the pilot group have already begun building workforce mutuality into their goals and objectives, with one organisation adding workforce mutuality to its strategic plan and another developing a complete organisation-wide workforce mutuality action plan.
HealthWest is now scoping the next phase of our work in workforce mutuality for 2019.

Update on Health Literacy Projects

HealthWest and our partners have been busy building organisational health literacy across the region.
Health Literacy Peer Mentoring Workshops
We’re planning to do a 2nd round of mentoring workshops in March 2019 (free!).
We invite organisations to attend 3 workshops during which they’ll:
  • Learn about health literate organisations.
  • Conduct an organisational self-assessment.
  • Get help to develop an action plan.
Organisations will also receive support from an experienced health literacy mentor.

We’re working on developing a small self-assessment tool that organisations can use to see how they can improve their health literacy responsiveness. It’s important that this tool is manageable and actionable, so we are holding hold two workshops with consumers and professionals in January 2019. Watch this space!

Seat at the Table: Celebration & Exhibition

Celebration and Exhibition
Seat at the Table wrapped up this month with a fantastic event. The celebration included speakers from HealthWest, Maribyrnong City Council - Youth Services, Orygen Youth Health and young people from the project.
This co-design and co-production project had great engagement from refugee and asylum seeker young people and mental health services. Seat at the Table has run for 2 years and ended with much of the work put on display in an exhibition at VU’s MetroWest.

Young people from the Seat at the Table project produced 2 videos of the co-design and co-production pilots that ran between September – November 2018.

The final impact evaluation of the Seat at the Table project is now available. This evaluation looked at the process of engagement both young people form refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds with mental health and youth services. Included are quotes from both young people and service providers.
It is an insightful and transparent look at how co-design works in practice, with many interesting learnings and recommendations.

Website launch
connectwest launched its website this month! connectwest aims to increase connections and opportunities for community groups and services across Melbourne’s west with this website. The event itself had 15 stallholders and guest speakers from Life Be In It and This Girl Can VIC.
It was a terrific networking event and shows the amount of work connectwest has put into strategic planning to because a platform for engagement in the west.

Article – Ten tips for advancing a culture of improvement in primary care

This article reflects on the quality improvement ‘journey’ and experiences of a Canadian primary care practice. The authors note that while they can distil their seven years of practice transformation into ten tips, “Success has required deep engagement with both patients and clinicians, a long-term vision, and requisite patience.” Notwithstanding this, their ten tips (that are expanded upon in the piece) are:
  1. Commit the time and resources
  2. Appeal to intrinsic motivation
  3. Measure and improve patient experience
  4. Try and pick an early win
  5. Learn and adjust course when things don’t go as planned
  6. Try, try and try again
  7. Involve patients in the improvement work
  8. Welcome criticism and accept imperfection
  9. Think in terms of ongoing improvement, not time-limited projects
  10. Integrate quality improvement with management and operations.

Communicating for Safety resource portal

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care has released a new Communicating for Safety resource portal. The online portal provides clinicians and health service managers with an easily navigable repository of tools and guides to support improvement in clinical communications, and implementation of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (second edition).

Australian loneliness report

The Australian Psychological Society and Swinburne University have launched this report, based on a national survey of adults. It examines the prevalence of loneliness and how it affects the physical and mental health of Australians. It is the most comprehensive study of loneliness completed in Australia.

Every suburb, every town: Poverty in Victoria

VCOSS and economic modelling firm NATSEM have launched a major report and online mapping project, providing new data and analysis previously unavailable. For the first time, poverty data in Victoria has been broken down, allowing policy makers to better target the needs of people in different places. There is also an interactive mapping site allowing everyone to better understand the specific nature of poverty in their local community.

3-day Health Literacy Masterclass

The masterclass will introduce the Ophelia process (Optimising HEalth LIterAcy and Access), a structured process for identifying and responding to health literacy needs by co-designing locally relevant interventions.
Measurement of health literacy will also be presented, including the widely used Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) and its use in needs assessment, evaluation, and quality improvement.

Identifying Family Violence training

The Western Integrated Family Violence Committee (WIFCV) is delivering Identifying Family Violence training across the western metropolitan region. They are currently offering dedicated 2 training sessions for organisations.
What does the training cover? This 2.5 hour training is an introduction to the core elements of family violence practice. Participants will increase their understanding of family violence, learn how to identify family violence, gain strategies to respond to disclosures, and learn about safety measures and appropriate referrals.
Who should attend this training? Workers who are not directly involved in family violence service delivery, but who may encounter women and children who are experiencing, or at risk of, family violence, from across a range of sectors.
When: Session times are available from February to June 2019

4-day Health Literacy Course

Reach more clients and improve communication
The Centre for Culture Ethnicity and Health (CEH) is running a 4-day Health Literacy Course. This course aims to help you make it easier for consumers to find, understand and use information about your services. From the course you will:
  • learn theories and practical skills to improve written and spoken communication with clients;
  • be introduced to tools to test how easy it is for clients to find their way around your organisation; and
  • apply the knowledge from the course directly to your work through two short work place projects.
Mercy Health was one of the first organisations to participate in the course and they have used health literacy principles and strategies to successfully improve consumer input into client resources. Link to full case study on Mercy Health
