Mike Edwards, Black Fireworks
Black Fireworks, an exhibition from painter Mike Edwards.
Our latest Window Gallery exhibition is from studio artist Mike Edwards. Mike's show of new paintings reflects current events and states of mind using a metaphor of ‘black fireworks’ which paradoxically darken the sky, as oppose to illuminate it. We asked Mike some questions about his work, read the interview here
"A black firework painting uses this as a metaphor to reflect contemporary or personal events that have affected me. Over the past three years global events have created an increasingly negative impact on both social and environmental issues. During September 2019 I endeavoured to make one Black Firework Painting a day - representing any number of dark events on that particular day. This show is an edit of the 30 paintings created during September."

Black Fireworks continues until 27 October.
Join us on 14 October for Spotlight, an evening of informal and informative conversation with Mike Edwards, and Philip Cole.
Join us from 19 - 20 October, when painter Victor Braun will be exhibiting in our Green Room. Preview: 18 October, 4 - 8.

A Message from Phoenix Art Space director Sarah Davies
It has been a productive start to the autumn season for everyone here at Phoenix Art Space. We are looking forward to a new and rewarding partnership with the University of Brighton and the new Centre for Arts and Wellbeing. This is a new initiative to further develop the impact of the arts on the wellbeing of individuals and communities which resonate with our own objectives of community participation and engagement.

In addition to this partnership with the University of Brighton, South East Dance, CCA Brighton and The Marlborough we aim to develop a new creative trail leading from Phoenix Art Space to Edward Street quarter. This sees a celebration of arts provision in our local area to include visual arts, contemporary dance, theatre and music – something for everyone.

Until next time,
