This month Phoenix Art Space celebrates two very different approaches to contemporary painting across two galleries. We invite you to join us this new year for The Society of Outsiders and H_A_R_D_P_A_I_N_T_I_N_Gx2.


Visit Part 1 of H_A_R_D_P_A_I_N_T_I_N_Gx2, an exhibition that explores the range of materials, systems and processes of contemporary painting. The first part of this two-part exhibition features Richard Bell, Katrina Blannin, John Carter, Catherine Ferguson, Della Gooden, Richard Graville, Morrissey & Hancock, Tess Jaray, Jo McGonigal, Lars Wolter and Jessie Yates. 
Part 1 of H_A_R_D_P_A_I_N_T_I_N_G continues until 2 February.
Join us for Part 2 after 8 February.
Come up with a name for a colour and you could win your very own a jar of pigment.

1. Look at the artwork in the H_A_R_D_P_A_I_N_T_I_N_G exhibition and pick a colour that you like.

2. Think of an interesting or unusual name for it. 

3. Take a photo of your colour and email it with your chosen name to

Each week the exhibition curators of will choose their favourite name and create a bespoke jar of pigment or paint for each winner!
Our Artist of the Month for January 2020 is Ian Boutell. Ian has been a studio artist at Phoenix Art Space for four years. He is a co-curator of our current H_A_R_D_P_A_I_N_T_I_N_G show, and is also presenting work in Part 2 of the exhibition.

The Society of Outsiders, Natalie Papamichael
Visit the Window Gallery this month to view the work of Phoenix studio artist Natalie Papamichael. Join her on the final day of her exhibition for an Artist Talk, when she will be discussing and answering questions about her work. Sunday 2 February, 11.00 - 12.00. Free, Drop-in.

Sophie Abbott & Alun Callender
A selection of our studio artists took part in a Pop-Up Photo shoot with photographer Alun Callender at Phoenix Art Space this week as part of a portrait project that celebrates the talent and creativity of our organisation. Participants include Sarah Gardner, Sophie Abbott, Jane Campling, Perdita Sinclair and many more! The plan is to exhibit the portraits, but you can get a sneak peek here.

Studio artist Natalie Papamichael is exhibiting in our Window Gallery throughout January. Did you enjoy her exhibition? She recently published a book of her selected works - find out more.

Denise Felkin is exhibiting at Arte Fiera Bologna with Hundred Heroines, an organisation that celebrates women in photography. The exhibition runs from 23 Jan - 15 March.

Drop in to our Family Fun workshop on 1 February. Come and be inspired by the materials and methods of what a painting can be, after visiting our current exhibition. Free and open to all.

Join us on 8 February for an artist-led symposium that will explore and discuss the themes of contemporary painting. Featured artists / speakers include Della Gooden, Daniel Sturgis, Katrina Blannin, Matthew Collings, Emma Biggs.
