Folklife Flashes
Holiday Season 2016

Celebrate our state's folklife and traditions!

Message from the Director

NC Folk wants to thank you for all of your support in 2016! We appreciate your donations, your kind words, and your dedication to the People's Arts in North Carolina! This is a wrap-up of some of our greatest hits in 2016. Be on the lookout in 2017 for our new website, expanded programming, and a few surprises as well. Happy New Year and a fantastic 2017!

FEATURED ARTIST

John Dee Holeman

Mr. John Dee Holeman graced the stage at NC Folk's 2016 Fundraiser at Motorco Music Hall in Durham. And when he played, every eye in the house was on him.

Holeman is among the most widely celebrated of traditional Piedmont musicians. A native of Orange County, North Carolina, Holeman has performed at the National Folk Festival and Carnegie Hall, and has conducted multiple overseas tours--many of which were sponsored by the U.S. State Department--to such faraway locations as Thailand, Africa, Singapore, and Turkey. Now in his 90s, Holeman continues to perform regularly throughout North Carolina. He is featured in the book Music Makers: Portraits and Songs from the Roots of America.

You can read more about John Dee Holeman here...

From Pinecone, the Piedmont Council of Traditional Music directory.

FRIENDS OF NC FOLK

NC Folk is lucky to have great friends like the Five Points Rounders, an amazing old-time string band hailing from Hillsborough, NC. Gut bucket master Robert "Fanbelt" VanVeld became infatuated with old-time string band music after meeting the amazing EC Ball and Orna Ball at the 1976 North Carolina Folk Festival.

With guitar player Tracy Lafleur, banjoist Colin Booy, fiddler Dave Bass, and VanVeld on standup bass, the Five Points Rounders bring old-time string band music to a new generation.

Check out their Facebook.

NC FOLK PARTNERS

Make sure to visit Cecil Sharp in Appalachia, great friends and partners of NC Folk.

2016, 2017 and 2018 celebrates 100 years since Sharp's travels in the southern Appalachians. NC Folk is working with Cecil Sharp in Appalachia to celebrate this centennial.

Stay tuned for a new photography exhibit of historic photos taken by Sharp on his song collecting excursions in North Carolina. Sponsored in part by the NC Humanities Council and NC Folk.
