In June, the Subgroup on Innovation for agricultural productivity and sustainability met for the fifth time. They discussed: the launch of the new Focus Groups, EIP-AGRI priorities for 2017, feedback from the Operational Group workshop and possible synergies between EIP-AGRI activities and Horizon 2020. Nuno Marques, a Portuguese farmer, has developed a land and soil management strategy for Mediterranean conditions. It is based on finding the best combination of farm economic viability and maintaining healthy soils, preserving soil organic matter and reducing sediment in water to fight against flooding. When water is scarce, irrigation scheduling and irrigation efficiency are especially important. New, innovative ways of obtaining real time feedback on irrigation management are currently being developed. FERTINNOWA is a thematic network funded under Horizon 2020 dealing with innovative water management in fertigated crops (nutrients added to irrigation water).
