Improving forestry value chains in Finland

The forestry sector has seen many changes in recent years, leading to a need for adapted management methods. Demands of society and markets are evolving, bioeconomy is increasingly important and new business potential and innovative possibilities are appearing. A Finnish project is looking into how to support forest owners in this context. Read on.

Pulses: superfood for the future

2016 is the UN’s year of the pulse. Innovation in food products using pulses, such as ‘pulled oat’ or faba bean yoghurt, combined with the results of research to improve their productivity, means that growing legume crops is becoming more competitive. EU agriculture can also benefit from their effects on soil fertility, cropping systems and biodiversity. Find out more.
The FAO have made a short film on why pulses are not only healthy and tasty but also important for sustainable food production, food security and nutrition.

Three new Focus Groups now launched

Experts for the following three new EIP-AGRI Focus Groups have been selected:
Robust and resilient dairy production systems
Agroforestry: introducing woody vegetation into intensive crop and livestock systems
Diseases and pests in viticulture
Click on each of the links to view the specific questions the experts will be addressing and to follow their progress.

EIP-AGRI Focus Group on Water and Agriculture

This Focus Group brought together 19 experts to look into farm-level adaptation strategies to deal with water scarcity. Read the fact sheet and the final report and discover ways to increase water availability for crops and livestock, and improve efficient use of water and farm resilience when there is a lack of water.

Data-driven business models contributing to the agri-food sector

ICT is fast invading agriculture and the supply chain, from input industries via farming and food processing, to logistics, retail and even the consumer (food and health apps). ICT solutions for agrobiodiversity

CAPSELLA is a Horizon 2020 project developing novel ICT solutions tailored to the needs and requirements of farmer communities and networks engaged in agrobiodiversity. CAPSELLA has launched a survey to collect information from the field to identify and understand the type of information that different people have and would like to have access to. Find out more.

Interactive workshop: irrigation and fertigation in horticultural production

FERTINNOWA thematic network is organising a workshop on the practical management of irrigation and fertigation in horticultural production (water quality, water use efficiency, nutrient use efficiency, source water management …). The event includes a day of field visits to innovative local growers. 12-13 October in Brittany, France. Register here

The final paper on a strategic approach to EU agricultural research & innovation is available online! It shows which areas have been identified as priorities for EU research and innovation and how the strategic approach could be implemented. More information.

FOOD 2030: Research & Innovation for tomorrow's Nutrition & Food Systems

The European Commission is organising this event to explore what is needed to transform and future-proof our food systems so that they can provide accessible, healthy and sustainable food for all. FOOD 2030 will be held in Brussels 12-13 October 2016. More information.
