Setting up short wood supply chains using hedgerows
Hedgerows in Normandy (France) were disappearing. Local inhabitants wanted to preserve this typical landscape feature. So they decided to generate an economic value for the hedgerows and set up a short wood supply chain. Involving all local groups in this was essential. Read more here.

European Bee Award for the protection of pollinators
Have you developed practices and innovative ideas in agriculture which can contribute to preserving the health of pollinators in Europe? The European Bee Award will give away two prizes, 5000 € and 2500 €, to innovative systems which protect honey bees, bumblebees, flies, butterflies and other pollinators in the farmed environment. The deadline for the European Satellite Navigation Competition is 30 June 2015. It is offering 1 million € worth of prizes for new satellite navigation applications for agriculture. Entrepreneurs, SMEs, start-ups and researchers, if you have developed innovative applications using satellite navigation with the potential to improve production, efficiency, profitability and to reduce environmental impact, then send in your applications here.

National Rural Networks meeting, a focus on fostering innovation
The second National Rural Networks (NRNs) meeting took place on 12-13 May 2015, in Jurmala, Latvia. Representatives of National Support Units exchanged the state-of-play of their action plans, discussed challenges and specific tasks. A particular focus was given to innovation. Participants discussed the different stages and varied types of arrangements for the implementation of EIP-AGRI at national/regional level, as in the cases of Portugal, Poland and Germany. The EIP-AGRI Workshop 'Building new biomass supply chains for the bio-based economy'
During the EIP-AGRI workshop on the bio-based economy on 27 and 28 May 2015, the participants visited the experimentation sites of the cardoon project in Sardinia as a case study. A number of other examples of sustainable bio-based supply chains were presented and the workshop participants worked in groups addressing drivers, obstacles, solutions and tools. Farmers, advisers and researchers contribute to the Organic farming research agenda in Milan
The European Commission organised the conference ‘Organic production, Research and Innovation: setting priorities for the future’ in Milan, 28-29 May 2015. Over 170 participants from all over Europe (farmers and farm advisers, and researchers) shared ideas and knowledge, and discussed needs for research and innovation in the organic farming sector. The European Commission will use the results to further develop its research and innovation policies, especially the 2018 - 2019 programme for Horizon 2020, but also the EIP-AGRI. Making the EU's olives greener...for the environment
Olives are not only a ‘superfood’ – they also create thousands of jobs in the Mediterranean region. But producing table olives or olive oil requires huge amounts of water and this can be scarce in hot, dry southern Europe. An EU-funded project has developed a system to re-use the water used to wash olives – good news for both the environment and olive producers limited by low water levels. Find out more.

Managing organic carbon content, reducing climate change effects
Organic carbon content is not only crucial for soil microorganisms populations and so for soil fertility; it plays an important role as a carbon sink to reduce climate change effects. The EU-funded project SmartSOIL has been studying the effects of agricultural practices on soil carbon content with the aim to provide farmers with the best strategies to keep the fertility and carbon content of their land high. A participatory approach to innovation projects
The new EIP-AGRI brochure on ‘Participatory approaches for agricultural innovation' highlights and gives practical examples of a number of methods which can help you set up new groups, identify partners and work with people from other professions or sectors to develop new projects. A new call for experts to be released
Another three new EIP-AGRI Focus Groups will start this autumn. They will address the following themes:
- FG16 Agroforestry and mixed farming systems
- FG17 Emissions from livestock
- FG18 Benchmarking farm performance (in terms of sustainability and economics)
Look out for the call for experts in early July which will be announced in our newsletter and on our website.
