Sustainable egg production

The laying hen sector has had to face many challenges in the past decade, including disease outbreaks and concerns over animal welfare. In cooperation with Wageningen University and other partners, Rondeel company (The Netherlands) thought up a new housing system for laying hens which would be able to provide solutions to these challenges and would also be economically viable. Their patented round building design resembles the birds’ natural habitat and means they can indulge in their natural behaviour. Find out more.

Complying with environmental regulations when spraying crops

The new ‘Pesticide Application Manager’ developed in Germany can help farmers comply with the law and avoid contaminating water sources or nature areas bordering their fields. It works with smart sprayers that can ‘read’ digital application maps. Read on.

Foraging the untapped value of Europe’s forests

EU-funded researchers are looking into the untapped commercial potential of products like wild berries, mushrooms, nuts and plants growing in Europe’s forests. Looking at regions stretching from Portugal to Finland, the researchers have demonstrated that these products have a market value which may easily outgrow wood production. The project is working with communities, identifying business opportunities from this as a way to generate growth and jobs. Find out more.

Diversifood, enhancing resilience and productivity

“Diversity enhances the resilience and productivity of biological systems. This principle holds not only at the level of primary production, but also at the level of marketing and consequent human health” says Véronique Chable, coordinator of the DIVERSIFOOD project. The newly funded H2020 project DIVERSIFOOD will explore how currently underutilised and forgotten plant species could be more widely grown to increase the range and quality of crops and their products and contribute to sustainable agriculture.
