Feeding pigs and poultry: tips for a 100% organic diet
Research shows that mussel meal could be used to replace fishmeal in feed for fattening pigs and organically produced spirulina algae can fully replace protein from traditional organic sources, such as soya, in broiler diets. Through the ICOPP project, researchers from 10 European countries have carried out tests to develop a range of recommendations on how to provide a balanced, 100% organic diet for healthy and productive animals. Innovative technology for animal feed rich in protein
An emerging start-up company from the west of France has developed a technique to separate the protein from the fibre in forage legumes to use in monogastric feed as an alternative to soya. Over 230 experts applied to the European Commission’s call for experts for three new EIP-AGRI Focus Groups: Mixed farming systems: livestock/cash crops, Benchmarking of farm productivity and sustainability performance, and Reducing emissions from cattle farming. The call closed on 7 September at 23:59. The selection process is now under way. More information on EIP-AGRI Focus Groups.

Horizon 2020 calls: latest news
A provisional version of the Horizon 2020 Work Programme 2016-2017 for Societal challenge 2, which addresses among other things agriculture and forestry, should be published in the coming days, following a unanimous vote by the Member States. The official final version should be approved by the European Commission on 13 October 2015. Watch out for the news on EIP-AGRI website. A specific InfoWeek on Societal Challenge 2 calls 2016 will be organised from 24 to 27 November 2015 in Brussels. You can already consult the programme of the workshop "Interactive innovation in motion: multi-actor projects and thematic networks under Horizon 2020" organised in particular for EIP-AGRI members. New sensor system sniffs out mycotoxins in wheat
Mycotoxins produced by fungi contaminate about 25 % of food crops worldwide, according to the latest estimates. Detecting contamination quickly and reliably is essential for food safety, as mycotoxins can make food unsafe to eat. The MYCOHUNT project developed a system that can sniff out mycotoxins almost immediately. Find out more.

Businesses, web-entrepreneurs, startups- FRACTALS has launched a call for innovative ideas for ICT solutions addressing the challenges in urban farming using FIWARE technologies (an open, public and royalty-free architecture and a set of open specifications for digital applications). Fourth SCAR Foresight Stakeholder Conference
The European Commission in close cooperation with the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR) is organising a conference entitled "Sustainable Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in the Bioeconomy - A Challenge for Europe” on 8 October in Brussels. One of the aims is to discuss with stakeholders the outcomes of the 4th SCAR foresight exercise which started in Spring 2014. More information here.
