Arts Integration League Summer Intensive

Teachers throughout Sarasota County got together for 3 days of Arts Integration Professional Development, June 20-22. The intensive, a partnership with the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, was the 4th annual of its kind and took place at the Venice Performing Arts Center. The professional learning workshop featured Classroom Management through Drama and The Actor's toolbox with Sean Layne, Kennedy Center teaching artist and Focus 5 founder. The intensive also provided a track for teachers working with students with disabilities and several other workshops in movement, visual art and drama. Teachers reported they felt inspired and are eager to implement the new skills in the beginning of the school year.

Project Elevate wrap-up

Project Elevate, made possible by the U.S. Department of Education, finished a second year of intensive and sustained arts integrated residency. Teachers from 2nd to 4th grade from Atwater, Brentwood, Emma E. Booker and Tuttle Elementary joined Jessica DiLorenzo, Arts Integration Specialist, in a year of implementing Drama, Dance and Visual Arts into the curriculum. We are really proud of the growth we experienced within our cohort and are looking forward to working with our next wave of teachers.

Expanding and enhancing Arts Programs

As part of our mission of expanding and enhancing arts programs in our schools, we are proud to see that additional elementary school will be adding Drama next school year. We are also proud that both orchestra programs at Venice and Woodland Middle Schools, under the guidance of orchestra director, Christopher Riley, received “Straight superiors” at the district-wide Music Performance Assessments this past school year. Watch the segment from The Ed Chanel about our amazing programs and hear from students how this opportunity has impacted their lives. To watch the video, click here.
