The Kennedy Center

Sarasota County Schools and Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall representatives have attended respectively the 2018 Any Given Child Exchange and the 2018 Partners in Education Annual Meeting at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. last month. Our Sarasota team this year also had the presence and insight of Dr. Wendy Katz, Education consultant promoting and expanding EdExploreSRQ for The Patterson Foundation. During our time at the conference, we participated in team discussions focused on engaging businesses, trauma-based learning and culturally responsive teaching. Any Given Child initiatives are now present in 25 different sites across the U.S.

The Ringling

Any Given Child Sarasota recently partnered with The Ringling Museum for a Professional Development for Project Elevate schools.Teachers from Emma E. Booker, Tuttle, Brentwood and Atwater Elementary had the opportunity to learn from our Arts Integration Specialist, Jessica Dilorenzo, visual thinking strategies and how to use visual art across the curriculum. The workshop served as a foundation for visual art instruction for teachers participating in the 3rd year of our Arts Integration Residency program. In May, Project Elevate teachers will bring their classes to visit The Ringling where they will practice the strategies they learned while facilitating the visit and engaging their students in a visual art exploration.

Paige Whelan

Paige Whelan, a visiting artist at The Hermitage Artist Retreat, visited Emma E. Booker to teach students to use photography as a tool for learning as part of her community outreach. Her project involved teaching students editing techniques and a hoverboard to place pictures of themselves in settings related to their learning, such as "traveling" to a historical time period. Page has worked as an Arts Integration Specialist and a technology teacher in Arlington, Virginia and now works as a national teaching artist teaching Arts and Technology Workshops.
