Happy Holidays!

As we approach winter break, we pause to think about what we have accomplished this year. Everyday we are inspired by the work we do. Helping all students experience the arts, in school and in the community. It takes all of us to make this happen. Thank you for your outstanding support so far.

Have a wonderful and peaceful Holiday Season!
Project Elevate News

As part of our Movement/Dance Focus for Project Elevate, we have been working with Sarasota Contemporary Dance at our 4 project schools. This past week, students from Brentwood and Tuttle Elementary have had the opportunity to watch a professional dance performance and then engage on an exploration to learn different dance styles.

In January we will continue this work with Kennedy Center teaching artist Eric Johnson who will focus on teaching teachers how to use movement in connection to the curriculum. Our arts integration specialist, Jessica Oatman, will then individually follow up and coach teachers on their implementation of this art form.

Arts Integration Spotlight

Art Teacher Carmen Sleeth and Music Teacher Karen Rochon from Cranberry Elementary have taken collaboration to a new level. After attending our most recent arts integration workshop with Richard Jenkins, they designed a lesson incorporating music and visual arts for all K-5 classes. These classes, called "Mart" (Music and Art) are inspiring students to visually create their own superhero characters and explore music and sounds that would become their theme and make these characters come alive.

For teachers:
  • Tuesday and Wednesday, January 24th and 25th from 5-7 pm: Kennedy Center Teaching Artist Eric Johnson will be teaching a workshop at the Conference Center at Suncoast Technical College. This two-part workshop will focus on helping teachers become comfortable with using movement and dance as strategies in their classrooms. Sign up in the Sarasota County Schools Professional Development system or email Maria.Schaedler-Luera@sarasotacountyschools.net if you have questions.
