Project Amplify

Project Amplify starts a new school year expanding arts integration strategies to almost all elementary schools in the district. Our Arts Integration Specialist, Jessica Dilorenzo, is now present in 21 of our elementary schools, empowering 100+ teachers to meet the needs of a diverse group of learners through the use of different art forms. This project has been developed to disseminate the work we are doing with Project Elevate, a professional development grant funded by the Department of Education,

DiLorenzo models drama and movement strategies in each school four times a year and teachers participate in webinars and evening professional development to complement, reflect and plan together. The goal is to build teams of teachers within each school so that educators can help support one another in sustaining this approach.

Performing Arts and Universal Design for Learning

All performing arts teachers from Sarasota County Schools had the opportunity to attend a professional development last week focusing on reaching diverse learners. Dr. Alice-Ann Darrow and Aaron Lohmeyer from the College of Music at Florida State University introduced practical lesson ideas and procedures to help make performing arts classrooms more inclusive for all learners. Teachers learned how to differentiate instruction, video examples, and hands-on ideas for teaching music, movement, storytelling, and improvisation.

Cultural Experiences

Providing access to theater and musical performances, museum visits and other art experiences for students is a priority of Any Given Child Sarasota. All grade level experiences are made free of charge for students and schools. Since the beginning of this school year students have participated in a variety of different experiences including the following:

  • Dragons Love Tacos: Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall presented Theatreworks USA’s newest musical revue of beloved contemporary children’s books.  First graders throughout Sarasota County Schools had the opportunity to experience the performance thanks to the generosity of supporters of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.
  • The Secret Garden: A rare and exciting opportunity for third grade students to attend a performance of The Secret Garden.  The performance features dancers of The Sarasota Ballet as they interpret the famous story by Frances Hodgson Burnett through dance and puppetry.Teachers have access to an integrated curriculum plan developed by The Sarasota Ballet and Sarasota County Schools. There is a focus on the creation process and the choreographer in the arts-integrated lesson plans, which can be done in the classroom before and after the students come to the performance.
  • Patriot Plaza: 8th graders from Sarasota County Schools have visited Patriot Plaza to learn about Civics through Visual Arts with an emphasis on veterans, citizenship, and the patriotic holidays of Veterans Day and Memorial Day. In addition to going to Patriot Plaza, students can also participate in an experience provided by the University of Florida/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at Twin Lakes Park, where they get to explore natural cycles that regulate and balance our biosphere. All visits are made possible by The Patterson Foundation and The Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County.
