The Kennedy Center

Sarasota County Schools and Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall representatives have just attended the 2017 Any Given Child Exchange and Partners in Education Conference at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. During our time at the conference, we engaged in different team discussions and focused on learning methods for evaluating our collective impact initiatives. Any Given Child initiatives are now present in 23 different sites across the U.S with San Juan, Puerto Rico, Albuquerque, New Mexico and Meridian, Mississippi being the newest additions.

Sarasota Contemporary Dance

Any Given Child Sarasota had the opportunity to partner with Sarasota Contemporary Dance for an in School Performance and exploration in our four Project Elevate schools. Students at Emma E. Booker, Tuttle, Brentwood and Atwater Elementary had the opportunity to watch a 45-minute assembly choreographed and performed by Sarasota Contemporary Dance featuring a wide array of dance styles through current company repertory. After the performance, students had the opportunity to learn three dance phrases of varying dance forms (Modern, Hip-Hop, and Salsa) and perform for their fellow classmates. This opportunity has served as a foundation for the introduction of Dance and Movement for the students and teachers participating in our Arts Integration Residency program.

Eric Johnson

In January we had the privilege to host Kennedy Center teaching artist, Eric Johnson who led workshops for the Arts Integration League Teachers and Project Elevate cohorts. Topics included how to use movement as an exciting instructional tool for the classroom. Throughout these workshops, participants learned classroom tested examples and reflected on how to adapt/implement the strategies in their own settings. Three demonstrations solidified the learning, including two demonstrations with exceptional students at Brentwood and Atwater Elementary. Participating teachers have shared that these workshops were extremely relevant, implementable and useful.
