Overwhelming Support for Telegraph Protected Bikeway Demo

This is awesome," "I want it right now" let's put it in the budget" and "this is what a bikeway should look like" were just some of the reactions to the parking-protected bikeway that Walk Oakland Bike Oakland and Bike Easy Bay assembled on Bike to Work Day, and that was just from city staff and Councilmembers. Seeing is believing was never more true than on the block of Telegraph between Sycamore and 27th, where a traffic lane was converted into a bikeway, protected by planter boxes and parked cars.

"This demo is very helpful to see what Telegraph could look like with a protected bikeway. I'm very interested in seeing how the project develops", Mayor Quan said after riding down Telegraph's pop up bikeway. Joining Oakland Mayor Jean Quan were Councilmembers Lynette McElhaney, Rebecca Kaplan and Dan Kalb, and seemingly the entirety of the Public Works Department, all of whom experienced the future of bicycling in Oakland--a protected bikeway.

To date, over 40 businesses on Telegraph have signed our petition for protected bikeways and you can help by patronizing these businesses, and by volunteering to help outreach to any Telegraph businesses you may have a relationship with. Contact Dave Campbell if you can help. Expect Oakland to release more refined designs for a Preferred Alternative this Summer, when begins another round of outreach to businesses, and another call for your help.
