Dear Adriaan

Since my last newsletter some very exciting things have happened. There is also a lot to look forward to over the coming months; I hope that you'll be able to join me on one or more of these adventures.

Ode to Mortality

Early in August I got news that one of my Kyoto pictures had been shortlisted for the ArtGemini Prize 2015, a major international art competition. The finalists' exhibition will be held at the Menier Gallery in London (51 Southwark Street, SE1 1RU) next week (22-26 September), and the winners of the various categories will be announced at the private view on Tuesday the 22nd. If you'd like to attend the private view (from 6-8.30 pm) then please email art@artgeminiprize.com as soon as possible to reserve your place.

My picture that made it to the finals is the one below, entitled "Ode to Mortality". The image shows cherry blossoms ("sakura" in Japanese) floating on a pond over a tree reflection at the Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto. It aims to capture something of the essence of sakura season in Japan. The arrival of the sakura (usually in early April) heralds the start of a period of intense celebration followed by reflection on mortality and the transience of beauty.

One of the large prints (40 x 27 inches) of this picture has already been sold, which means there are four prints left in this edition. If you'd like to add one to your own collection then please let me know; I can also arrange top quality framing if required (at additional cost).

Northumberland

We had a fantastic photography experience in Northumberland in August.

Getting up at 4 am and going to bed at 11 pm and doing it all again (and again) is not everyone's idea of a good time, but to us it was pure heaven!

You can see some of my pictures from the trip on my Blog.

The next Northumberland experience is scheduled for 18-21 June and the focus then will be on the wonderful wildlife as much as the incredible landscapes of this amazing county. (Sir David Attenborough has said that the Farne Islands are his favourite wildlife location in the UK.) There are only three places so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Photography Experiences

Unfortunately we couldn't get the numbers to make the planned Lake District weekend work, which means that I'll now be photographing the supermoon on Monday the 28th September at a promising location in Kent. If you're interested to join me for this then let me know; the cost will be £175 for a full day experience.

Looking beyond the supermoon we have another London architecture day in October, deer photography in November, Dungeness in December, the Jurassic Coast in January and Norfolk in February. Spaces are still also available on my wildlife photography day at the British Wildlife Centre in December.

Booking is now open for all these experiences and as usual you can view the current schedule of all the experiences on my website (apart from those that are advertised exclusively via my newsletter). Places are always limited so please do book early if you'd like to join one or more of these adventures.

African Safaris in 2017

With the expected arrival of our baby girl in about five weeks' time and the inevitable childcare implications, I've decided to move my safari programme forward to 2017. However the details of my two planned safaris remain the same as per my last newsletter, i.e.:

  1. August: 14 days South Africa. Cape Town, West Coast wildflowers, whales & some of the best big cat photography available anywhere. Total cost including international flights from the UK estimated to be in the region of £4,950.
  2. September: 15 days Kenya. Amboseli, Samburu, Mount Kenya region, Great Lakes, and three full days in the Maasai Mara to photograph the Great Migration. Total cost including international flights from the UK estimated to be in the region of £7,500.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you'd like to join me for one of these fantastic trips. Once I have an idea of numbers I will then finalise the details (including costs) with my operators and travel consultant partners. I am not taking deposits at the moment, just expressions of interest, and you can be assured that I will keep you informed throughout the process.

Photography Experience Days at Denbies Wine Estate

I've now run three of the four photography experience days at Denbies Wine Estate scheduled for this year and all have been very well received.

Booking is now open for the final experience day on Sunday 18 October. This should be a good one as we might well have some autumn colours in the vineyard.

Free Photography Walkaround at RHS Wisley

On Saturday the 3rd of October I will be doing a free photography walkaround at RHS Wisley from 2 pm. It will be a very relaxed, fun experience suitable for the whole family. There will be an optional photo challenge for those who feel like it. No special equipment is necessary so you can bring anything from your mobile phone (as long as it has a camera) to a DSLR with a macro or telephoto lens.

All you will need to pay are the regular Wisley entrance fees; the walkaround itself is free.

If you'd like to come along then please email me so that I can get an idea of numbers. I will send out joining instructions closer to the time.

2016 Calendar

My new calendar for 2016 is now available on my website. The calendar covers January to December 2016.

This is a large A3-size split wall calendar showcasing different landscape locations and wildlife subjects. Each month features an image taken during the same month in the last two years.

My wildlife calendar will be published again by Calvendo Verlag this year. Let me know if you're interested in that one and I'll send you a link.

Photography and Poetry

In my last newsletter I highlighted my new "Dark Mercy" video which featured some of my pictures set to one of the wonderful songs by my good friends Jacques Coetzee and Barbara Fairhead of Red Earth and Rust, a fantastic blues band based in Cape Town. (If you missed it previously you can still watch the video on my YouTube channel.)

I'm very pleased to report that Jacques has agreed to collaborate with me on a photography and poetry project. The final result will be a large format coffee table book featuring some of Jacques' amazing poems, each one accompanied by a carefully chosen photographic image. I'll be looking into crowdsourcing opportunities shortly but if you'd like to get involved at an early stage please let me know.

As it turns out Jacques and Barbara are getting married tomorrow at their house in Cape Town. They are such a lovely, creative and devoted couple — I wish them both the utmost happiness and a long life together.

Final Word

The final word this time goes to Elzabe Malan from Cape Town who voted for me in the Exposure competition: "Your work is outstanding, that of a true artist who portrays the passion for his art."

Thanks very much, Elzabe — you're not too bad yourself!

Until next time ...
