Head of School Search:
How Alumni Can Help

Dear Fellow Alumni:

In preparation for the June 2018 retirement of Headmaster Vance Wilson, the Governing Board has actively begun work to find his replacement. Vance’s tenure at the school has been exceptional, and we are deeply grateful to him for putting our School in such a solid position as the search is begun.

Our alumni interests are well represented on the search committee: Chris Gladstone ’75, P’12 (Governing Board member and Finance Committee Chair), is one the three co-chairs, and of the eleven other members, four are fellow alums (George Haywood ’69, P’15; David Marriott ’92, P’20, ’22; Blake Sparrow ’00; and Brendan Sullivan ’93, Alumni Association President).

Executive search firm Spencer Stuart will guide our search process for a new Headmaster; their team (Mary Gorman and Chuck Jordan) will visit St. Albans on February 28 and March 1, 2017, gain a deeper understanding of our School and to ask the community to share their thoughts about St. Albans, its future leadership, and its needs, hopes, and goals going forward.

An alumni-only session with the search firm representatives will be held in the Cafritz Refectory at 7:30 a.m. on February 28; breakfast will available beginning at 7:15. Please register here; there is no charge. (The Alumni Office, in partnership with both the search committee and Spencer Stuart, is hosting the meeting)  If you are unable to attend the 2/28 meeting, a community-wide gathering is scheduled for March 1 at 4 p.m. in the Trapier Theater.  Additionally, aforementioned Brendan Sullivan ’93 will host our New York alumni body (with Spencer Stuart’s Mary Gorman) at an evening meeting on March 7 at the Princeton Club (details will be sent to NY-area Bulldogs separately).

Whether or not you attend these gatherings, every alumnus is encouraged to share his thoughts by writing directly (and confidentially) to StAlbansHead@SpencerStuart.com. Going forward, the School will continue to post information about the search at www.stalbansschool.org/HeadSearch. Please feel free to share this website and email address with your friends and fellow alumni.

(As part of the School’s ongoing curriculum review and long-range planning, the School is in the process of conducting confidential surveys of current parents, young alumni, students, and faculty and staff. The feedback will also be used to provide additional context for the Head of School search. We hope that all of the alumni from ’91 on -- who received the survey -- will take the needed time to respond in depth. Thank you!)

After listening to our community, the search committee will prepare and distribute a position description for our next Head of School. We hope these various outreach methods will allow alumni, near and far, to play an active role in the process. Many thanks in advance for your help and support with this critical endeavor!

Onward, Bulldogs!

P.S. - There are a number of excellent alumni events coming up in the next month. All are welcome; no long-term commitment nor prior experience required. In exchange for a few hours of your time, you’ll enjoy good food and drink, great company, and the priceless satisfaction of supporting current students and teachers. And, as most any caller will tell you, Phonathons are fun!

Community in the News

42nd Street at Trapier Theater

"Come and meet those dancing feet..." These lyrics come from the title song from "42nd Street" and are apropos, indeed. The Coordinate Theater Department invites you to join them February 24-26 and March 3 & 4 as they present the 1980 Tony Award winning American classic. With a cast of nearly "half a hundred", the Brylawski Stage will come alive with the song and dance telling the story of the making of a broadway show, "Pretty Lady", as America moves out of the depression. The cast and crew hope you join them for what will be a delightful evening of theater. First IAC Hockey Banner in School History

Congratulations to the St. Albans varsity hockey team for clinching a share of the IAC regular season championship with St. Stephen's & St. Agnes and earning the first IAC hockey banner in school history. Seniors David Mohler, with a hat trick, and Ethan Roth, with 40 saves, led the Bulldogs in their 4-2 win. Read more...

STRIVE Campaign Reaches New Heights!

Last month, Headmaster Vance Wilson shared the exciting news that the STRIVE Campaign had passed $40 million, ending 2016 at $41.5 million. Thank you!

The success of a year-end matching gift initiative sponsored by members of the Governing Board helped to propel the campaign beyond its $20 million goal for the athletic fields. To date, $20.4 million has been raised, with the excess going to a reserve fund to repair the facilities and replace the turf in the future, ensuring that future students will continue to have an exceptional facility for outdoor practices and competitions.
Looking ahead, STRIVE will continue to focus on its first priority, Annual Giving, while pivoting to the campaign's final capital goal: growing endowment support for teachers and students. Read the complete update here. For more information on how you can help support STRIVE, please contact Campaign Director David Shepard at (202) 537-6427 or dshepard@stalbansschool.org.

February 2017 Alumni Puzzler

Question: This coveted pin is the symbol the Society of Altis; what was the purpose of this group, and who started it?
Please send responses to alumni@stalbanschool.org

Answer to the January 2017 Alumni Puzzler

Question: The Centennial commemoration “window” (a backlit installation on an interior wall), designed by Bo Johns ’09, heralded a change in shape of what STA class tradition?

Answer: Class Windows beginning with 2009’s were made as squares, instead of a more-traditional diamond shape (and not the first time of such a change: in the ’60s, Class Windows placed in the Little Sanctuary we built to fit existing bullet-shaped openings).

Many thanks to those of you who responded!

Remember when...
From the February 15, 1957, Saint Albans News:

What was happening on the Close in February of 1997? 1987? 1977? 1967? 1957? Thanks to the efforts of Archivist Mark Wilkerson, we're now able to step back in time to peruse and enjoy front page articles from The St. Albans News.
