Director's Corner

  • The Landon Game
  • October events
  • Alumni bookshelf

Mark those calendars for the STA vs. Landon varsity football on November 12! We’re away against our Bethesda rivals, but will have a full squad of Bulldog supporters ringing Bordley Stadium. Look for our our pop-up tent and tables full of STA booster items! A special note to our Golden Bulldogs (post 50th-Reunion alumni): the pre-game coin-toss against your Grizzly Bear contemporaries (at 1:25 p.m.) could use your presence!

October is always a busy month, and this one has been no exception; three Phonathons (the last of which is 10/25), The Headmaster’s Associates reception at Meridian House on 10/4, a 10/13 New York networking event at the office of Ted Sullivan ’95 (featuring a discussion with his classmate, ESPN’s Connor Schell ’95), and this past Homecoming weekend 10/14 & 15 (soccer beat Landon, but football fell to Georgetown Prep). Upcoming is the 27th Annual Vernon W. Holleman ’54 Tournament on 10/23, and a 10/30 reception for our many friends in southern Connecticut, hosted by John Chadwick ’57 at The Riverside Yacht Club.

Stalwart volunteer Richard Ruge ’59 has been spending time in the Ellison Library making certain that the alumni bookshelf is up to date; please send him a copy of your latest tome(s) care of the School, so that we might fully represent your accomplishments!

STA to Livestream
Upcoming Games

If you didn’t make it to our Homecoming games this past Saturday or can’t make it any other time this fall, here's another option for you: our Communications team will be livestreaming select sporting events to Bulldog fans around the globe. As such, they asked varsity football and soccer coaches at the start of the fall season to choose a game that they felt would be appropriate to livestream; those games are coming up.

Next Friday, October 21 the varsity soccer team (5-3-1) will take on Georgetown Prep at 4 p.m. on Steuart Field; then on Saturday, November 5 the varsity football (4-1) game welcomes St. Stephens/Saint Agnes at 2:30 p.m. Both games may be viewed by clicking on this link (or on the image below).

AG! Annual Giving STRIVE Logo

Looking Back: 2015-16

43 percent of St. Albans alumni—1,817 in all—participated in Annual Giving last year. Bulldog alumni gave generously, too, contributing an all-time record $1.2 million—the equivalent of 28 full student scholarships. Individually and collectively, every one of these gifts make a profound difference for the boys studying at St. Albans today. Thank you.

How STA Stacks Up

STA is an alumni participation leader among DC area schools (Go Bulldogs!), but we have room for improvement when compared with our national peers. While our past results place us in rarefied air, we aspire to achieve even greater results. With everyone’s help, we know we can break through the 50% participation barrier.

Looking Ahead: 2016-17

Annual Giving remains our first priority during STRIVE. Every donor to AG is also a campaign donor. Every gift directly supports students and their teachers, and helps keep our community strong.

So when you receive a call from a volunteer or a letter in the mail this fall, please take time to carefully consider the request, and respond as generously as you are able. Every gift—at every level—makes a difference and is appreciated. Thank you!

Last Call: Fall ’16 Phonathon

All are welcome (and encouraged!) to join us in the Cafritz Refectory for the final night of our fall Alumni Phonathon: Tuesday, October 25 at 6 p.m.

Whether you’re a seasoned volunteer or a first-time caller, we need your help!  The work is satisfying (the money raised directly supports students and teachers) and dinner and drinks are on the house. Plus, you get to spend an evening hanging with Bulldogs in the refectory - what could be better?!

Sign-ups and questions should be directed to Associate Director of Annual Giving Kavon Akhtar (or 202-537-6409). We hope to see you!

Reunion 2017:

October 2016 Alumni Puzzler

Question:  For many years, this needlepointed image of St. Alban was used as a banner for processions at and by the school.  The needlework was done from a sketch by a then-current student, using another student as a model.  Can you name the artist, the model, or both?
Please send responses to alumni@stalbanschool.org

Answer to the September 2016 Alumni Puzzler

Question:The Washington National Cathedral’s Jerusalem Altar and Canterbury pulpit share a connection with what building on our campus?

Answer: Both were stored in the Little Sanctuary – along with the Bishop Satterlee’s cathedral -- while Washington National Cathedral was being constructed (the photo below shows things to be a bit cramped…)

Thanks to all who responded!
