       Reunions 2016 | OTC v.3
Welcome Back Alumni!
We invite all St. Albans School alumni to return on May 6th and 7th for Reunion 2016! In just over two short weeks, 13 classes with years ending on ’1 and ’6 will gather on the Close to celebrate their collective reunions and to reconnect with the School and one another. Memories will come flooding back, friendships will be rekindled, and merriment will ensue!
We kick things off on the evening of Thursday the fifth, actually; our Golden Bulldog reception will be held that night in the Cafritz Refectory, for those classes that have already held their fiftieth reunion. This special gathering begins at 5:30 p.m., and features a brief announcement and presentation regarding the undefeated (and untied!) 1955 football squad, arranged by Bill Ellis ’56 and Parker Harrell ’56.
Saturday morning begins with the Little Sanctuary alumni memorial service at 9:15 (at which our dear friend Will Billow is kindly filling in for on-sabbatical Brooks Hundley), then alumni seminars led by Drs. Morse and Piazza. The Headmaster’s Luncheon in the Cafritz Refectory (noon) is not to be missed – there will be a special mention of our first-ever 70th Reunion class (with Stanley Willis ’46 accepting accolades along with his stalwart classmates).  At 1:45, Michael Slaby ’96 will lead a TED-styled talk titled Innovating Democracy? in the Trapier Theater (Michael was the Chief Integration and Innovation Officer for the 2012 Obama campaign). Informal class meetings in Marriott Hall will be followed at 4 p.m. by the triumphant return of the rooftop beer tasting and networking event, which was such a success last year. We thank both the organizers and hosts for arranging the thirteen class-specific parties on Saturday evening that will be held in locations across the city.
I remind fellow alumni that everyone is welcome at the general reunion events, so if you live in the DC area or happen to be in town, please come by! All alumni are invited to the Friday night barbecue at NCS, Saturday service, seminars, luncheon, tours, and events. A full schedule of activities can be found at this link.
I look forward to seeing you at Reunion 2016!
Off-The-Close Networking Series, v.3
Kudos to the diligent members of our Alumni Association Board for their evident success in launching the Off-the-Close Networking Series, the inaugural event of which was held last February (Optoro) with a second event (Smathers & Branson) last November. The third iteration of the Off-The-Close Networking Series on April 28 features the principals of Bedrock Management – Geoff Dawson ’79 and Mark Handwerger ’81 – discussing their partnerships and other ventures at their Buffalo Billiards flagship off Dupont Circle. Don’t miss this one – it should be another hugely entertaining evening!

Onward, Bulldogs!

St. Albans alumni participate in Annual Giving at a higher rate than any other peer school in the DC area. In fact, such outstanding results put us in rarefied air among all independent schools across the country. Last year, more than 1,800 alumni – 44% – supported AG with an average gift north of $600. The commitment and generosity of so many alumni is something of which can all take pride. It’s a team effort; and we’ve got an exceptional team. Thank you.

Of course, as Bulldogs are wont to do, we aspire to even greater heights. With just 71 days remaining in the 2015-16 Annual Giving year, we will endeavor (once again) to see if we can crest the elusive 50% participation mark. We need at least 614 more alumni supporters to get there (adding to the 1,490 generous Bulldogs committed already). June 30, 2016 is the deadline.

Alumni gifts strengthen our community, support students and teachers, and build momentum that encourages others to be generous. So if have yet to contribute this year – don’t delay!  Please consider making your gift today. (And if you’ve already made you contribution – thank you!)

PLEASE NOTE: In a few weeks you will receive the 2015-16 Preliminary Report of Annual Giving. Please take a moment to check your listing and correct any inaccuracies as soon as possible. Should you have questions, please call us at 202-537-6409.

April 2016 Alumni Puzzler

Question: In the Fall of 1914, the School opened with the new name “St. Albans, The National Cathedral School for Boys” – what had the School been referred to as previously?
  1. Harriet Lane-Johnston Cathedral Choir School for Boys
  2. Lane-Johnston School for Boys
  3. The National Cathedral School for Boys
  4. All of the above

Answer to the March 2016 Alumni Puzzler

Question: Today’s (Wednesday, March 16) track meet invitational at Steuart Field is the first official meet in several decades. In what year was the last track meet held? (This glass vial, a memento from the Fields Groundbreaking in 2014, contains material from the old, oddly-shaped and non-regulation track at Satterlee-Henderson Field, pictured at rear.)

Answer: Conversations with Larry Shipp ’72 and Bobby Clayton ’69 confirm that the last track meet held at St. Albans was on May 12, 1969 (at which Clayton broke the School’s two-mile record with a time of 10:03.2).  The March 16, 2016 meet on the new regulation track kicked off with a lap by Honorary Alumnus Oliver “Skip” Grant!

Thanks to everyone who responded!
