Director's Corner

The progress on the historic renovation of our athletic fields is remarkable. While I am afforded daily the opportunity of passing the site and seeing incremental changes, this webcam gives a bird's-eye view and offers the experience of a time-lapse perspective (one can customize and take control of real-time views with this cam).  Thank you to our family of loyal and generous STRIVE supporters for enabling this important work to move forward.

As we look both forward to new facilities next year and back in celebration of shared experiences on Satterlee-Henderson Field, we are mindful to recognize the challenges faced by our current student athletes. The fall teams now practice in the Prison Yard, on the Little Field, or at NCS; they venture farther afield (ahem) for scrimmages at Duke Ellington and at Anacostia and West Potomac parks.  Varsity Soccer has held home games at St. Andrew’s, Episcopal, and Landon; Varsity Football, at Wilson, Eastern, Wootton, and Sidwell – again, these are home games (even Homecoming games). Despite our having to host games around town (and in our neighboring states), we can all be proud that the boys have shown remarkable flexibility, along with traditional grit and determination. We are grateful to our many off-campus hosts for allowing us to use their facilities.

Saturday, November 8th, is the last football game of our season and presents a chance for us to gather our community together: the Alumni Office will host a cookout at Landon, starting at 12:30 and continuing to game time at 2:00. (A ceremonial coin toss between the Landon and St. Albans football senior players from 1964 will be a 50th- anniversary event not to be missed!) I encourage you and your families to don your STA gear and join us under our bold blue-and-white tents on Wilson Lane in support of our STA Bulldogs!

As always, my colleagues and I welcome your comments, suggestions, and questions. Please keep in touch!

Annual Giving:
The Power of Many

Last year, a record 46% of alumni - nearly 1,900 St. Albans men -  participated in Annual Giving, which is particularly impressive for a School with a senior class that numbers around 80 students.

Bulldog alumni are a generous bunch (the average alumni AG contribution last year was $567). Unlike what happens at some of our peer schools, the $1 million plus a year that St. Albans alumni give does not come from a handful of individuals but results generosity of thousands in our community.

How St. Albans Stacks Up

Relative to other DC area independent schools, STA leads the way (Go Bulldogs!), and we’re in rarefied air when compared with national peers. With your help, we can reach new heights.

For year two of the STRIVE Campaign, of which Annual Giving is the first priority, we set an ambitious goal of increasing alumni participation to 50%. Every gift matters. Every gift strengthens our community. Every gift supports teachers and learners.

Recently, you should have received a letter asking for your support of 2014-15 Annual Giving. Please take a moment to read it, and consider making a gift as you are able.  Thank you!

For an up-to-date progress report of the STRIVE Campaign, click here. At the athletic fields groundbreaking event last May, members of the  community shared their favorite memories from the field.

Renovations are in full swing. Check out this stream of time-lapse photos of the fields under construction to see the progress of the fields.
The project will take one year to complete and will include a new multisport field with turf and stadium seating for 600, practice fields, a baseball field, a six-lane regulation track, seven tennis courts, and a tennis pavilion with locker rooms.

From the STA Archives

In 1977, Stuart Dunnan ’77 interviewed members of the St. Albans community about Mr. True, who began teaching in the Lower School in 1922 and served as Head of Lower School from 1931 to 1965.  Thanks to the efforts of Archivist Mark Wilkerson, the video can now be viewed on the School's web site. Enjoy!

Support the Christmas House Tour Auction

The Christmas House Tour Auction Committee is seeking donations for their Christmas House Tour Auction. The money raised goes directly to support the faculty and staff in their work with the boys, including technology grants and innovative science materials.
The Auction Committee would especially welcome donations of any of the following: vacation home stays, frequent flier miles, shadow experiences, behind-the-scenes tours, lunches with community leaders, opportunities to be an extra in a show,  VIP tickets, or donations from your local business
If you or a business you know would be willing to donate an item or two to the auction, please let us know at or complete our online form here.  (deadline is October 22, 2014). Thanks for supporting this important community event.

A Note from the STA Admissions Office
