Director's Corner

West Coast | Alumni Dinner
Kudos to our Alumni Association Board, led by President Michael Caskin ’84, for their successful launch of the Off-the-Close Networking Series. The inaugural event was held on February 18, with more than 80 alumni, parents, and friends of the School gathering in downtown DC, at the headquarters of Optoro, to mingle and share professional experiences and insights. Three members of Optoro’s executive leadership, CEO Toby Moore ’00 and President Adam Vitarello ’00, classmates and co-founders, and CFO Bob Latchford ’88, provided inspiring remarks about the company, for which, according to Toby, the groundwork was first laid sometime in A Form. The evening was an unquestioned success, and we are deeply grateful to Toby, Adam, Bob, and the team at Optoro for hosting us, Alumni Board Vice-President Brendan Sullivan ’93 for spearheading this effort, and to all who were able to join us. (For those who couldn’t attend, pictures from the evening are available here; look for another event coming soon!)

Last week’s event brought the Bulldog Network to life for all who attended and reminded me of the importance of offering opportunities to “bring the Close” to alumni and friends beyond the DC area. Building on the success of our New York City gathering last fall, Headmaster Wilson and I are taking our show to the West Coast in March (next week!). We kick off with an evening reception co-hosted by John Siegler ’73 in Seattle on Tuesday, March 3. Wednesday, March 4, is a double-header with Hilleary Hoskinson ’79 co-hosting a luncheon in Palo Alto and  Richard Chow ’79 co-hosting an evening gathering in San Francisco. We’ll close with the Rev. Will Billow co-hosting a reception Thursday evening (the fifth) in Los Angeles. Details on all events are below (or click on the links of the aforementioned cities). We hope that these mini-reunions (too infrequent by my measure) will lure members of the St. Albans family away from their offices and everyday lives to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow alumni in their region and  hear the Headmaster talk about St. Albans today. Please join us!

Not to be overshadowed by all this activity, we also look forward to the 90th Annual Alumni Association Meeting and Dinner on March 11. This evening is the Alumni Association’s signature event, and with good reason. The single largest annual alumni gathering of the year with over 300 Bulldogs from seven decades will fill the Ellison Library and Cafritz Refectory in joyous reunion. A spring classic, the Alumni Dinner brings together generations of alumni in a celebration of our connections and an opportunity to honor our traditions. If you’ve never been, and will be in the DC area, I encourage you to come and join in the festivity (and if you’re a regular - see you there!); as added incentive, alumni of the last ten years may attend the evening’s events at a discounted rate. I hope to see you all (or many of you) then!

Alumni and the STA Community in the News

STA Named Nation’s “Smartest Boarding School”
The online news journal has named St. Albans the #1 smartest boarding school in America. The news site ranked schools based on average SAT scores.

A swimming record has hung on the walls by the Lawrence pool for so long that it was seemingly cast in stone: for over four decades the names of William Reid ’74, Warren Strudwick ’74, Jody Inglefield ’74, and John Verdin ’75, and their time of 3:20.05  in the 400 yard freestyle was beyond the grasp of the next 41 aquatic teams. Records, of course, are made to be broken: last month, future alums James Flood ’16, Ruslan Gabidoulline ’17, Alexandre LaBossiere ’18, and Henry Bredar ’15 entered the pool and the record books with their 3:16.95.  We applaud the new record holders, but give a standing ovation to the gentlemen from the 1970s. Well done!

The STA100K: Maximize your AG support

Governing Board members have committed $100,000 to create the STA100K, a challenge to encourage 1,000 alumni, parents, and friends, to participate in Annual Giving by March 17. It’s an all or nothing opportunity.
As generous as the STA family is, bringing together 1,000 donors between February 2 and March 17, 2015 is a big deal. We need everyone’s support to get there and every new gift/pledge made (and pledge fulfilled) to 2014-15 Annual Giving counts. While parents and friends will surely do their part, STA100K success truly will hinge on strong alumni turnout. So if you haven’t already, please make your gift today; don’t be the one that leaves us short come March 17!
Every year, contributions large and small come together to provide critical resources for teachers and learners at St. Albans. Win or lose this challenge (though winning would be better), your participation helps the School and underscores your Bulldog pride.
If you’ve already made your gift, thank you! Help us to spread the word by sharing the details (including progress updates) found here.  You may also direct questions to 202-537-6409.

We’re excited to report that the athletic field renovation is on schedule. As long as the snow and rain stay away, the fields will be ready for fall 2015 sports—and probably summer programs, too. About half way through the project, STA’s Director of Capital Projects offered this virtual video tour of the future fields.
The STRIVE Campaign has surpassed the halfway mark, having raised $27 million of its $50 million goal, with $16 million in gifts and pledges for the athletic fields. For more information, visit A camera on the Cathedral’s central tower offers a live view of construction. For more information, contact David Shepard at (202) 537-6427 or
