STRIVE Campaign Reaches Half Way Point!

Thanks to the generosity of 3,947 donors, the STRIVE Campaign has reached $25.37 million this fall, putting us, in the second year of the campaign, more than halfway to our $50 million campaign goal.

“I am, once again, deeply moved by the generosity of our community, which finds countless ways to support our boys and our teachers,” said Headmaster Vance Wilson.

Early campaign efforts have concentrated on the athletic fields renovation. Noted Associate Headmaster of Development Dan Jamieson: “We’ve raised $15.47 million toward our goal for the fields. We hope to raise the entire $20 million for the fields before our first soccer and football games next fall. I’m confident that our wonderful alumni and parents will help us meet that challenge.” Read more.

Howell Family Endows Fund to Support Faculty

In 2011, now Governing Board member Lloyd Howell Jr. and his wife, Patricia, parents of Lloyd ’13 and William ’16, showed their support of our faculty by establishing the Howell Family Faculty Support Fund, an endowed fund that supports faculty salaries. Both Mr. and Mrs. Howell’s mothers were educators, so they knew, first-hand, the dedication needed to help students succeed, and they recognized that passion in the St. Albans faculty. Because of their mothers, they also were well aware that a student’s success often starts with the relationship he has with a teacher. The relationships they, as a family, would form at St. Albans helped shaped their perception and impression of the School.

Why I Volunteer

Each year, hundreds of alumni and parents volunteer at St. Albans. At our fall Annual Giving phonathon, we asked a few alumni volunteers one question: “Why do you volunteer?” Here’s what they said:

“Volunteering for STA is a thank-you moment. Those seemingly relentless hours of classroom and homework made me far more richly absorbent in college. I also was a lousy student under Ferdinand Ruge yet somehow retained his bounteous rules. That helped me sculpt a writing career with a fair share of awards. Ruge is probably grumbling that it isn’t possible. So I just say thanks to him and the many other teachers who showed me better ways to think and express.”

“Alumni Phonathons are all about camaraderie; they’re a great chance to see some friends, share a beer and a good meal, and catch up with classmates while raising support for the School.”

“I love doing anything I can to repay the substantial debt I owe St. Albans for everything it gave me: great memories, an unmatched education, and lifelong relationships with friends and teachers. It’s also great fun to visit campus, walk the halls, and reminisce about the ‘glory days’ with fellow alumni.”
