Our BOLD group – the Bulldogs of Last Decades – has a few events upcoming about which our younger alumni should be aware:  Additionally, for our BOLD alumni who are back in town early for the holidays and are hoping to hit Lessons and Carols on December 17, the Alumni Association is hosting a Cocoa and Cookies reception before L&C begins. Please join us at 5 pm in the Common Room for a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with old friends and special faculty members before heading off for that cherished holiday tradition of Lessons and Carols in the Cathedral!

A crisp fall day set the tone for our final varsity football game on our new fields last weekend.  The smell of leaves and the smoke from the grill added to the festive atmosphere, with a barbecue lunch in our Alumni Association tent pitched along Pilgrim Road, across from the new entry plaza.  Although the exciting game resulted in a Landon win (the overall record is now 40-42-4), there were memorable highlights, one of which was the halftime presentation of a golden football to Headmaster Wilson by NFL hall-of-famer Jonathan Ogden ’92.  A Trophy Room reception closed out a lovely autumn day. Many thanks to the many alumni who came to all of the events.

A newer feature of the eNews is to be found at the end of the newsletter itself.  With thanks to our archivist, B Form Master Mark Wilkerson, we are able to offer up entire issues of the St. Albans News from 30, 40 and 50 years ago.  Please take a moment to review the headlines from the day and let us know what you think.

Jonathan Ogden '92 Presents Golden NFL Football to Headmaster Wilson

At the varsity football game against Landon on November 14, St. Albans welcomed back NFL Hall of Fame Offensive Lineman Jonathan Ogden '92 for a special presentation of an NFL Commemorative Golden Football. This golden football is part of the Super Bowl High School Honor Roll Program that celebrates high schools and communities that have contributed to Super Bowl history. We congratulate Mr. Ogden on his many career accomplishments and thank him for his contributions to St. Albans School. Enjoy the video of the ceremony and photos from the game.

Last year, 44% of alumni, more than 1,800 St. Albans men, participating in Annual Giving. Bulldog alumni give generously, too, as the average alumni contribution was $611. All told, alumni contributed a record $1.1 million last year—a sum equivalent to 28 full student scholarships! Together, alumni gifts make a profound difference. Thank you.

St. Albans leads the way in alumni participation around DC (Go Bulldogs!), and we hold our own against our peers nationally. That said, we aspire to even greater success. And with your support, we know we can get there.

Annual Giving remains our first priority during STRIVE. Every donor to AG is also a campaign donor. Most importantly, every gift provides resources that allow St. Albans to hire and retain teachers who engage and inspire our students. During this time of reflection and thanksgiving, please consider making your gift this year in honor/memory of a teacher, coach, or mentor who inspired you (simply include your honoree’s name in the “notes” section of the online form). Should you have questions, or would prefer to give by phone, please call 202-537-6409.

Many thanks to all who have already given this year. Your support—at every level—is truly appreciated.

November 2015 Alumni Puzzler

Question: The six Class Windows for 1960 to 1965 differed from the traditional diamond shape; where are they located and what is their purpose?

Please send responses to STA_Alumni@cathedral.org

Answer to the October 2015 Alumni Puzzler

Question: What is the significance of this plaque, mounted in the "red hallway" (first floor of Lane-Johnston), and listing the names of the graduating class from 1959?

Answer: This bronze plaque listing the names of the graduating class of 1959 is noteworthy in that this was the final year of this particular 49-year tradition; names would henceforth be lettered in gold on the walls of an expanding Refectory. (The other class tradition, however, stands….)

Thanks to everyone who responded!

What was happening on the Close in the fall of 1985? 1975? 1965? Thanks to the efforts of Archivist Mark Wilkerson, we're now able to step back in time to peruse and enjoy archival issues of The St. Albans News.
