Alumni Dinner Recap
Thanks to those of you who attended our 91st Alumni Dinner on March 9. This evening has come to be known as the Alumni Association’s signature event, and with good reason: the largest single alumni gathering held at the School, it represents an opportunity for alumni of all ages to reunite, celebrate our connections and honor our traditions. This year’s dinner speaker, David Gardner ’84, current parent and co-founder of The Motley Fool, added gentle humor with his business acumen (and provided these STA-acrostic stock tips). The Gilchrist-Holleman award for Alumni Service was presented to past Governing Board member and Annual Giving Chair Dick Ellison ’48.  Paul Herman was named an Honorary Alumnus of the school. (Ben Hutto was also so awarded, posthumously -- his sister Cathey accepted and spoke on behalf of the Hutto family.) Alumni Board President Michael Caskin ’84 kept the tight program moving along! (Photos of the evening may be viewed here.)

Boston & NYC Receptions with the Headmaster
We had a great turnout at the joint NCS/STA event at the Presidio in San Francisco in February, with 50 attendees – a big thank you to all who joined us! The Headmaster will deliver his State of the School presentation next week in Boston (Monday, March 21) and next month in New York (Tuesday, April 12). All are welcome; please join us!
Off-the-Close Networking Series, v.3
Kudos to the diligent members of our Alumni Association Board for their evident success in launching the Off-the-Close Networking Series, the inaugural event of which was held last February (Optoro) with a second event (Smathers & Branson) last November. The third iteration is slated for April 28 and will feature the principals of Bedrock Management – Geoff Dawson ’79 and Mark Handwerger ’81 – discussing their partnerships and other ventures at their Buffalo Billiards flagship just off Dupont Circle.

Reunion 2016 — Welcome Alumni!
We invite all alumni to return to the Close May 6 and 7 for Reunion 2016! In just two months, 13 classes with years ending in ’1 and ’6 will gather to celebrate and to reconnect with the School and one another. Memories will come flooding back and friendships will be rekindled!

The joint NCS/STA Friday evening barbecue will be held at NCS this year. Saturday morning begins with an alumni memorial service in the Little Sanctuary at nine, followed by alumni seminars led by Drs. Morse and Piazza. The Headmaster’s luncheon on the Frist Terrace atop Marriott Hall is not to be missed, nor the beer tasting and networking event that will follow (now in its second year). New for this year: Mike Slaby ’96 (Chief Integration and Innovation Officer for Obama 2012) will present “Innovating Democracy?” in the Trapier Theater.  We thank him, as well as the organizers and hosts who have arranged the class-specific parties on Saturday evening.

I would remind fellow alumni that everyone is welcome at the general reunion events; nobody is excluded from these festivities, so if you live in the DC area or happen to be in town, please come by! All alumni are invited to the Friday night barbecue, Saturday luncheon and seminars, tours and events. A full schedule of activities can be found at this link. (A word to the wise is sufficient: Mother’s Day is the Sunday of Flower Mart weekend!)

We look forward to seeing you at Reunion 2016!

Onward, Bulldogs!

A Giant Leap for Students & Teachers: Thank You!

Hundreds of generous Albanians, from around the world, rallied during the 2016 Leap Year Challenge and helped to earn every dollar of the $29,000 challenge pool. In all, 474 donors, including 319 alumni, contributed a total of $258,932, making the challenge a smashing success.
To all who participated by giving, by urging others to give, and by cheering this extraordinary effort as it unfolded, thank you! The effect of volunteer enthusiasm and encouragement on our final result cannot be overstated. We are especially grateful for the leadership of our Governing Board challenger, whose generous incentive provided the foundation for victory.
February’s success boosted our alumni participation rate by 8 points and put our goal of 50% by June 30, 2016, within reach. However, we’re not there yet. As always, every gift, regardless of size, is important and appreciated. If you have yet to contribute, please consider doing so today. Thank you!

Alumni Dinner Photo Highlights

We were delighted to welcome over 220 Bulldogs back to the Close this year for our Annual Alumni Meeting and Dinner. Having the Cafritz Refectory filled with alumni—ranging from the Class of ’48 to the Class of ’11—is an impressive and wonderful sight.  Our photographer captured a number of highlights of the night, which we think you’ll enjoy reviewing in this slideshow (also accessible via the photo above).
The enduring commitment of our School’s alumni never ceases to amaze!

Chorale Concerts in the Carolinas

The Chorale’s 2016 spring break tour is in memory of Mr. Benjamin Hutto, director of performing arts at NCS and St. Albans from 1999-2015, who passed away on September 29, 2015. March 2016 Alumni Puzzler

Question: Today’s (Wednesday, March 16) track meet invitational at Steuart Field is the first official meet in several decades. In what year was the last track meet held? (This glass vial, a memento from the Fields Groundbreaking in 2014, contains material from the old, oddly-shaped and non-regulation track at Satterlee-Henderson Field, pictured at rear.)

Please send responses to
Answer to the February 2016 Alumni Puzzler

Question: This curious metal artifact was unearthed from the archives; “The illustrious class of ’51” is etched on the front (the reverse bears the engravings from the classes of, among others, ’58, ’59, ’61 and ’69 and the expression “hoo hah”); rumor has it that this item was retrieved from the bowels of Vesuvius…Qu'est-ce que c'est?

Answer:  It was a different era -- The St. Albans News ran half-page cigarette ads, for goodness sake! This metal ashtray from the student lounge in the crawlspace beneath the Little Sanctuary – nicknamed Vesuvius for the billowing smoke – was saved from the ash heap (har, har) by none other than Fedinand Ruge (himself a partaker of unfiltered Luckies, as I recall – as I said, a different era)!
Thanks to everyone who responded!
