Director's Corner

The Old Ball Game
Few things in life are better than an evening at the ball field with good friends, cold beverages, and a great baseball game. Having the chance to enjoy two out of three of these things is good too! Despite a Nationals 5-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on June 18th, one of the teams' best players leaving the game with a hamstring injury, and a seventeen-minute rain delay, the St. Albans group – almost sixty strong this year – prevailed and had a great time cheering on the home team.
Our two-hour pre-game reception got off to a strong start (despite passing showers) with a Surfside-catered taco bar in a private section of the Fairgrounds, the soon-to-be-developed acre of repurposed (and artfully-stacked) shipping containers. Our group was evenly split between alumni (special mention goes to the Classes of 2004 and 2009 for their stalwart posse) and current students and their parents (2023 should be a cohesive group; they certainly held their own through the bottom of the ninth!).
The skies cleared and the rain passed; Bryce Harper’s injury was short-lived; and the Nats are currently in first place in the National League East. Special thanks to our Alumni Association Board Vice-President Brendan Sullivan ’93 who arranged the event (and procured the excellent seats) and brought his daughter Livi along to celebrate her first birthday.
New Fields
Excitement is building as finishing touches are being put in place for our athletic field renovation. The multipurpose field in the new stadium is in place, as are baseball dugout and bullpens. The STA Tennis Club is almost ready to re-open (discounted alumni memberships are available). Many thanks to all who have supported this important project as part of the STRIVE Campaign.
Please mark your calendars for our first Homecoming Weekend games on the new fields. Varsity Soccer plays on Friday, October 2 at 4:30 p.m. (vs. Episcopal) and Varsity Football (vs. Flint Hill) on Saturday, October 3 at 2 p.m. (the traditional pre-game BBQ will start at noon). Hope to see you there!
BOLD Group Gathering - August 6
Our BOLD Group – Bulldogs Of the Last Decades – will gather for a Happy Hour at Roofer’s Union on Thursday, August 6. Bulldogs from the Classes of ’95 to ’13 are encouraged to stop by for appetizers and giveaways, starting at 5:30 p.m. (Roofer’s Union is in Adams Morgan, at 2446 18th Street.) FYI: Dress is casual, cash bar, and friends are welcome.  An R.S.V.P. to will help with our planning. Special thanks to our Young Alumni Chair Martin MacIntyre ’05 and his fellow Alumni Board members Blount Stewart ’08 and Henry Brooke ’10 for their assistance with this gathering.

2014-15 AG Success:
Thank You Bulldogs!

In 2014-2015, St. Albans Annual Giving raised $2,541,832—the highest total in AG history—with 44% of alumni and 94% of current parents participating. The results are notable for their strength and breadth across all of the School’s constituencies: alumni, parents, and friends.

Alumni from the Classes of 1936 to 2015—1,799 in all—contributed $1,099,373, or 43%, of the overall total, setting a new all-time record for alumni AG dollars. Among the many reasons for last year’s success were our exceptionally generous Reunion classes (the ’0s and ’5s), the continued support of our many 1909 Society members (donors who contributed three or more years in a row), and, perhaps most importantly, the collective power of many alumni gifts.
Our 44% alumni participation rate, while not a record, places St. Albans at the very top of peer schools nationally, and is a result in which we can all be proud. In total, nearly 3,000 members of our community made a gift to last year’s effort.  Such broad and substantial support from alumni, parents, and friends, particularly in the second year of the STRIVE Campaign (in which AG remains our first priority), exemplify our community’s enduring commitment to sustaining the unique elements that make up a St. Albans education.
On behalf of the Headmaster, and the many teachers and learners who benefit from alumni support, THANK YOU! More details on last year’s results, including class-by-class participation numbers and the outcome of our inaugural Blue-White Challenge, will be shared with you soon. Additionally, the School will be mail the summer Bulletin, which includes the Annual Report of Donors, in late August. We hope you will take time to review it and join us in celebrating the incredible generosity of our STA family.

To our Annual Giving volunteers…

St. Albans School is fortunate to have a truly outstanding team of AG volunteers. The success of our program is possible because of the legions of Class Agents, Phonathon callers, Decade Captains, and Reunion Committee members who work hard throughout the year to encourage the support of their classmates and friends. Their outreach, as well as the gifts received in response to their efforts, strengthens our alumni community and makes a true difference for the boys and their teachers. For their dedicated service, we are especially thankful.

If you are interested in joining the AG Volunteer team, please call Dave Steadman in the Annual Giving Office at 202-537-5687, or send him an e-mail at
