Director's Corner
Annual Meeting & Dinner | Coach Rob Green
Headmaster Wilson's recently announced retirement in 2018 adds special significance to this year's Annual Alumni Association Meeting and Dinner on March 8. The dinner is the Alumni Association’s signature event, and with good reason: the evening brings together generations of alumni in a celebration of our connections with the opportunity to honor our traditions. It is the single-largest annual alumni gathering of the year, with over 300 Bulldogs from seven decades filling the Ellison Library and Cafritz Refectory in joyous reunion. If you’re a local and have yet to attend this, you’ve been missing out!
This year’s keynote speaker will be Steven Johnson ’86, the author of ten books whose writings have influenced everything from cutting-edge ideas in urban planning to the battle against 21st-century terrorism. His work on the history of innovation inspired 2014’s Emmy-nominated six-part series on PBS, How We Got To Now. His most recent book, Wonderland: How Play Made the Modern World, revolves around the creative power of play.
We will also honor long-time volunteer and former Alumni Association President Parker Harrell ’56 with a much-deserved presentation of the Gilchrist-Holleman Alumni Service Award. Additionally, we will induct beloved (and feared!) former master Thierry Boussard into the rolls as our newest Honorary Alumnus. I encourage one and all to come and join in the festivity! As an added incentive, alumni of the last ten years may attend the evening’s events at a discounted rate. Details may be found here.
Rob Green has served this school with dignified distinction for 35 years. In his term as Director of Aquatics, our swimming program has gotten ever stronger. He announced earlier this year that this season would be his last; indeed, only a handful of meets remain. Thursday, February 16 will be the final swim meet for the school year. Join us as our squad swims against Sidwell Friends at 4 pm in the Lawrence Pool, and bid adieu to a legend!
Onward, Bulldogs!

Alumni support strengthens the School
We had a ground swell of alumni support in December as 468 alumni made year-end gifts to 2016-17 Annual Giving. To them – and to all who contributed so far this year – thank you!
The record-setting holiday giving season boosted momentum toward our goals as we begin our sprint to the June finish line. A few highlights on our progress (as of 1/25/17):
- 27% alumni participation (1,163 alumni given/pledged)
- $835,133 in alumni gifts (equal to 20 full scholarships!)
- $706 average alumni commitment
- Participation leaders (by decade):
- Class of ’49 – 48%
- Class of ’57 – 64%
- Class of ’64 – 62%
- Class of ’71 – 34%
- Class of ’80 – 36%
- Class of ’97 – 39%
- Class of ’02 – 44%
- Class of ’16 – 74%
Thank you and well done to our class participation leaders! With broad support and focused volunteer effort, we are hopeful that we can reach 50% participation for the first time ever by our fiscal year deadline of June 30, 2017.
Every alumni gift to Annual Giving makes an immediate difference for every boy and every teacher. And, since AG is the STRIVE Campaign’s first priority, every donor to AG is also a campaign donor. So if you have not already, please consider making your gift today!

STRIVE Campaign Reaches New Heights!
At the Parent Dinner on January 25, Headmaster Vance Wilson shared the exciting news that the STRIVE Campaign had passed $40 million, ending 2016 at $41.5 million. Thank you!
The success of a year-end matching gift initiative sponsored by members of the Governing Board helped to propel the campaign beyond its $20 million goal for the athletic fields. To date, $20.4 has been raised, with the excess going to a reserve fund to repair the facilities and replace the turf in the future, ensuring that future students will continue to have an exceptional facility for outdoor practices and competitions.
Looking ahead, STRIVE will continue to focus on its first priority, raising Annual Giving support, as it pivots attention to the campaign's final capital priority: growing endowment support for teachers and students. Read the complete update here. For more information on how you can help support STRIVE, please contact Campaign Director David Shepard at (202) 537-6427 or dshepard@stalbansschool.org.

From the STA Archives
January 2017 Alumni Puzzler
Question: The Centennial commemoration “window” (a backlit installation on an interior wall), designed by Bo Johns ’09, heralded a change in shape of what STA class tradition?
Answer to the December 2016 Alumni Puzzler

Question: Two of the Cathedral schools gather tomorrow evening for the Festival of Lessons & Carols, as the heads of both NCS and STA participate in this beautiful and memorable holiday service led by the Bishop. Among the many traditions in the time-honored two-hour program: singing, music and dancing by students of both schools; congregational carols sung by parents and friends; lessons read by school illuminati; and the frequently–shushed Rear Nave interaction between Form II boys and eighth-grade girls.
When did the Festival of Lessons & Carols first begin as a tradition on the Close?
Answer: While lessons and carols would have naturally found a place in the lives of students during the Holidays at a church school, our tradition of a formal service in the Cathedral dates all the way back to December 7, 1943.
Many thanks to those of you who responded!

What was happening on the Close in January of 1997? 1987? 1977? 1967? 1957? Thanks to the efforts of Archivist Mark Wilkerson, we're now able to step back in time to peruse and enjoy front page articles from The St. Albans News.
