Reunion Weekend 2015 -- Welcome back to the Close!

We invite all St. Albans School alumni to return to the Close May 1 and 2 for Reunion 2015! In just two short weeks, 12 classes with years ending on ’0 and ’5 will gather on the Close to mark their reunion and to reconnect with the School and one another. All alumni are welcome to attend the general events, so if you live in the area, or will be in town, please join us. A complete weekend schedule and registration information can be found at www.stalbansschool.org/reunion

For the first time in recent recollection, the Friday evening NCS/STA family barbecue will be hosted in Senior Circle, allowing for improved accessibility and, of course, fantastic views of the Cathedral, Bishop’s Garden, and Olmstead Woods. Planned activities for kids include face painting, balloon artistry, and a bounce house.  Dress is casual and all are welcome!

The Class of 1975 has decided to mark their fortieth by hosting an after-party following Friday night's barbeque. Two of their musician classmates will join up with a band to play popular tunes, and the class has very kindly opened up the party to all. '75 will provide drinks, snacks, and entertainment at no charge, and simply ask that those planning to attend sign-up in advance by emailing sta_alumni@cathedral.org.Beginning around 8:30 p.m., the event will take place in the Faculty Convocation Room and adjoining Decker Terrace (on Marriott Hall’s lower level, across from Trapier).

Saturday begins with the annual alumni Memorial Service at 9 a.m. in the Little Sanctuary, followed by alumni seminars led by Drs. Morse and Piazza, and WIll Segal '00. The Headmaster’s Luncheon on the Frist Terrace atop Marriott Hall is not to be missed, nor the beer tasting and networking event that later that afternoon. The weekend caps off with class-specific dinners and parties on Saturday evening.

We are grateful to all the volunteers who have helped to put this weekend together, especially our Reunion Committees and Saturday evening event hosts, and look forward to seeing you all back on the Close soon!

Class of 2015 Alumni Day

On April 8th, the Class of 2015 participated in Alumni Day, an event co-hosted by the STA Alumni Association Board and the Office of Alumni Relations. The event provides seniors with an opportunity to learn more about their future lives as alumni, and what to expect as members of the Alumni Association. Alumni Association President Michael Caskin ’84 began the program, and was followed by Carter DeLorme ’88, Christian Miles ’72, and Ryan Temme ’97, who led a panel on Alumni Volunteer service. Edward Crocker ’09 and Matt Grieb ’08 facilitated a discussion on what it takes to have a successful and well-rounded college experience, and Blake Sparrow ’00, Ben Seesel ’97, and Brendan Sullivan ’93 shared their varied career paths and provided insight and tips on career planning. Executive Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations Dave Steadman offered advice on the use of social media for networking, and Director of Alumni Relations Lanier Frank ’79 demonstrated the handy STA Alumni App (download here) and helped students download it on to their devices. Seniors were asked to consider a 5 year pledge to Annual Giving (an impressive 80% chose to do so), and professional headshots were taken for profile pages on LinkedIn and other networking sites. The day ended with a perennial highlight for the boys—a full barbeque lunch from Rockland’s! Please enjoy these photos from the day, and join us in wishing the Class of 2015 well as they prepare to join the alumni ranks.

Alumni and the STA Community in the News

Szoradi ’85 Shares "En-light-ened" Career Path
St. Albans welcomed Charlie Szoradi ’85 back to campus on February 20th. At the invitation of longtime Economics Teacher Ted Eagles ’54, Charlie came to speak with the boys about his start in business and how he founded   Independence LED Lighting, a U.S. based manufacturer of solid state lighting products. In addition to sharing highlights of his career, Charlie also showed off some of his company’s LED (Light Emitting Diode) tubes, which are notable for their environmentally friendly and energy-cost reducing features, as well as their resemblance to Jedi lightsabers (as seen in the photo included). After graduating from St. Albans, Charlie studied Architecture at the University of Virginia and received his Masters of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.

Two STA Alumni Awarded Guggenheims
Former STA classmates Brent Edwards '86 and Alex Ross '86 have been awarded coveted fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. The Guggenheim Fellowships are "intended for men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts."

Edwards, a professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University, has written extensively on jazz, the African diaspora, Francophone literature, 20th century cultural politics in Paris, and surrealism (read more here). Ross has been the music critic for The New Yorker since 1996. His first book, The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century, won a National Book Critics Circle Award and the Guardian First Book Award (learn more here).

A Message from Headmaster Wilson
In the fall of 2013, our long-time director of alumni relations, Don Swagart ’76, moved from the Development and Alumni Office to our Athletic Department, where he has been serving as assistant director of athletics, working with the football, basketball, and baseball teams. I’m pleased to announce that Don has agreed to take on yet another title. As Sports Information Director, Don will keep our current families and alumni informed, engaged and, of course, excited about St. Albans’ athletics. (Follow STA Athletics on Twitter: https://twitter.com/STABulldogs.) I hope you will join me in thanking Don for taking on this new responsibility.

STA100K Challenge Success – 706 Rally for Annual Giving!

All said, 706 alumni, parents and friends contributed during the STA100K, setting an all-time record for total donors in February and March. Although short of our ambitious 1,000 donor goal, the final outcome is a testament to Bulldog pride and generosity. As a result, our challengers were thrilled to release an additional $70,600 – further magnifying the impact of everyone who contributed.

Supporting Annual Giving strengthens our community and provides the resources needed to provide today’s students with an amazing education. So to all the donors and volunteers who helped earn this big win for STA, we extend our deepest appreciation. Thank you!

Coming Attractions:
The Preliminary Report of Annual Giving

In a few weeks you will receive the 2014-2015 Preliminary Report of Annual Giving. Please be sure to check your listing and correct inaccuracies before June 30, 2015. Should you have questions, please contact the Annual Giving Office at 202-537-6409.

Many thanks to the 1,518 alumni who have stepped up for Annual Giving this year. If you have yet to make your gift this year – don’t delay! Your contribution provides direct support for students, teachers, and all the unique elements that go into providing a St. Albans education. Thank you!

We hoped to complete the renovation of the athletic fields in 12 months. However, knowing that construction was heavily weather-dependent, we planned a 15 month contingency timeline, which we have pushed into following a snowy and wet winter. The Beauvoir Pool will be completed and opened over Memorial Day weekend. We are diligently working on the delivery of the other athletic venues, which we anticipate will be open by mid-summer. To view time-lapse photos and live streaming video of our progress, please visit www.sta1.org/fieldscamera.
