Dear Parents of STA Alumni:

Once again, St. Albans’ school year began in the Cathedral, with fresh-faced C Formers and towering seniors processing in side by side. At the Opening Service, Headmaster Vance Wilson reminded the boys of their responsibility to do good in the world: “Given the privilege of being here and St. Albans’ education and the humanity your parents have instilled in you, we charge you to work for the good, whether in business or by-lines, elections or education.” The full text of the Headmaster’s Opening Day Homily is available online.

Back-to-School News

School started on a Wednesday; by Friday morning Mr. Paul Herman successfully remembered all but three Lower Schoolers’ names. Following tradition, each of those boys went home $2 richer.

At the first assembly, Head of Upper School Ben Labaree asked students to strive to be kind, patient, and empathetic. Said Labaree: “The biggest challenges of your lives and the biggest decisions you will face will not, I can almost guarantee, turn on your ability to explain the details of the Kansas-Nebraska Act, paint a still life, or make sense of Faulkner. They are far more likely to turn on matters of the heart and depend on habits of the mind that you begin to develop here and now.”

Students in Forms I through VI are adjusting to a new, 7-day, rotating schedule. The highlight for many boys: earlier lunches! Family-style lunch for hungry Upper Schoolers now begins at least a half hour earlier each day.

It took only 20 minutes to line up 270 Lower Schoolers on the Pilgrim Steps and get them to stand still and smile. This short video’with cameos by Messrs. Herman, Johnsen, Brockway and Wilkerson—captures the behind-the-scenes craziness of the annual Lower School photo.

Last spring, right after the final baseball, tennis, and lacrosse games, work began on the athletic fields. Construction progressed quickly this summer. Thanks to a camera on the Cathedral’s central tower, you can follow progress on the fields project. The renovation of the fields is expected to take one year.

Make Your Gift to this Year's Annual Giving Effort

Alumni parent support of Annual Giving makes a true difference in the lives of every student and every teacher, every day. Last year, parents of alumni played a critical role in Annual Giving’s success, contributing more than 11 percent of the record-setting $2.4 million raised. Simply said, we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you!

We encourage you to take a moment to review the 2013-14 Annual Report of Donors (part of the summer issue of The Bulletin) and join us in celebrating the philanthropic spirit that runs through the St. Albans family.

As we begin year two of STRIVE: A Campaign for St. Albans, our first priority is to sustain Annual Giving (every gift to Annual Giving is a gift to the campaign). So whether you give in gratitude for your son’s time at St. Albans, to help “pay-it-forward” to current students, or both, please consider supporting 2014-2015 Annual Giving today by visiting www.stalbansschool.org/onlinegiving, or calling the Annual Giving Office at (202) 537-6409. As always, your gift will be put to work immediately for the benefit of the boys and their teachers. Thank you.

Should you have questions, please contact Rebecca Morris, Assistant Director of Annual Giving, by calling 202-537-6409 or sending an e-mail to rmorris@cathedral.org.

Please Volunteer at the Christmas House Tour!

Parents of Alumni, please consider becoming a docent at the Alumni House on the 2014 St. Albans Christmas House Tour on Friday, December 5, and Saturday, December 6.

This year’s Home for the Holidays tour will feature five beautiful homes decorated for the holidays right in St. Albans’ very own neighborhood, Cleveland Park. As the Parents’ Association’s largest fundraiser for the School, with all proceeds benefiting faculty and staff, the Christmas House Tour is a significant event; it also provides an enjoyable way to reconnect with fellow STA parents.

We are looking for seven to eight docents for each of four shifts—morning and afternoon on each day. To sign up or for additional information, please contact the Alumni House Tour manager:
