Director's Corner

Over the summer, Headmaster Wilson and department heads reflected on life at St. Albans over the 2014-15 school year and prepared reports, which may be found here. In reviewing them I hope you will find, as I did, that our School is as strong as ever.

The new school year began just a few short weeks ago with an Opening Day Cathedral Service featuring the now-established tradition of individual C Formers processing down the main nave flanked by Form VI boys. Acting Headmaster David Baad ’83 delivered the homily for Mr. Wilson, who is on sabbatical through January. Photos from the day, found here, may even take you back to your first day.

A year of “home” games held away and relocated daily practices came to a joyous end last weekend as the first games were played on the new fields. Mr. Baad opened the soccer and football games on Steuart Field with reflections on past glories and the promise of future triumphs. Indeed, both teams won their respective matches, and the new turf playing surface showed its worth as a morning-long rainstorm on Saturday ended just as competition began.

Many alumni joined us for the first games and we look forward to welcoming many more back for the soccer, cross country, and football events over Homecoming Weekend, October 2 and 3. (We’ll have our traditional Homecoming cookout near the new athletic complex’s entry plaza at noon on October 3 - - don’t miss it!)

Sunday, October 11 is the date for the 26th Annual Vernon W. Holleman Jr. ’54 Bulldog Golf Tournament. We encourage golfers of all ages and abilities to join us in beautiful Myersville, MD for what is always an enjoyable day. Steps for registration may be found here.

As always, my colleagues and I welcome your comments, suggestions, and questions. Please keep in touch!

Bulldog Golf Tournament

Please join us on Sunday, October 11, 2015, for the 26th Annual Vernon W. Holleman Jr. '54 Bulldog Golf Tournament. Once again, we return to the foothills of the Catoctin Mountains for an afternoon on one of Maryland's finest and most scenic golf courses, Musket Ridge Golf Club in Myersville, Maryland. For golf experts and enthusiasts alike, the Bulldog Tourney is a "can't miss" event for the entire St. Albans community. Click here for more information and to register online.

What makes St. Albans unique?

Our 2015 summer interns put together a short video of responses to this question as a way to say thanks to all who supported 2014-15 Annual Giving. We hope you enjoy it.
Alumni support plays an essential role in making our School such an extraordinary place to teach and to learn. An impressive 44% of alumni participated in AG last year, and we hope to build on this success as this year’s effort gets under way. When you receive your fall letter, or call from a classmate volunteer, please consider giving as generously as you are able. Every gift makes a true difference. Thank you!

September 2015 Alumni Puzzler
Question:  What is the name of this space at the school and what is the history behind the name? Please send responses to
Answer to the August 2015 Alumni Puzzler
Question: This doorway, still used several times daily, is now a covered entry.  Covered by what and when?

Answer: The 1968 expansion of the Cafritz Refectory (and creation of the science labs underneath) to bridge the Lane-Johnston and True-Lucas buildings made for a covered entry to this lowest level of the Lower School.

Thanks to everyone who responded!

Remember when...

What was happening on the Close in the fall of 1985? 1975? 1965? Thanks to the efforts of Archivist Mark Wilkerson, we're now able to step back in time to peruse and enjoy archival issues of The St. Albans News.
