April updates from Howe Sound Women's Centre Society

Men: Join us in the journey to end violence

Written by Kelsey Rose, Howe Sound Women's Centre Society

We are often asked by men how they can support the work we do at the Women's Centre.  The first opportunity we point to is our annual event, Walk a Mile in Her Shoes, coming up in Whistler April 20th.  This march gives men the chance to take a visible stand against violence by literally walking in women's shoes to raise much needed funds for the Women's Centre, and to show the Sea to Sky community takes violence prevention seriously.

But Walk a Mile is just one day a year.  The question then becomes, how can men act as allies in the struggle to end violence all year long, in more subtle ways than walking through Whistler or Squamish in red pumps?  Read more here.

Thanks and Thanks!

Celebrating National Volunteer Week April 6 - 12

Did you know Canada has 13.3 million volunteers?  The Right Honorable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, calls Canada a smart and caring nation.  "It's our dedication to community involvement that has given us that reputation at home and around the globe."

The Howe Sound Women's Centre Society is celebrating this spirit of giving with National Volunteer Week April 6 through 12, 2014

The Clothesline Project

The Howe Sound Women’s Centre Society presents The Clothesline Project, an annual campaign also focused on raising awareness about the issue of violence against women. The project will take place during Prevention of Violence Against Women Week April 13 – 19. Members of the community are invited to drop by the Squamish & Whistler Public Libraries throughout the week to design t-shirts with words or images that represent their personal beliefs, understanding or experiences of violence against women. The t-shirts will remain on display for the duration of the week. T-shirts and art supplies will be provided. Drop in times will be announced at a later date.
