On April 3, 2014, Livres Canada Books gave two well-received presentations to Canadian Heritage and to the office of the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. The Director of the Frankfurt Book Fair, Juergen Boos and Vice-President, Thomas Minkus attended both presentations.

Scouting Mission to Turkey

Livres Canada Books will be organizing a scouting mission to Turkey this year. The mission will include meetings with associations, publishers, agents and distributors as well as visits to bookstores and libraries. Guidelines and delegate nomination selection forms will be sent to ANEL, ACP and ACUP in the coming weeks.

NEW MARKET GUIDES AVAILABLE

Five new and updated market guides are now available on our website.
 
Distribution and Sales in the UK: A Guide for Canadian Publishers, by Peter Kilborn, includes information and advice on choosing a UK distributor and sales agent, setting up product information and data feeds, UK subject classifications, recent developments in print-on-demand and digital products, and much more.
 
Selling Canadian Books Into Japan, by Robin Birtle, updates and revises a report commissioned by Livres Canada Books in 2004. This market guide includes new sections on licensing translation rights and opportunities in digital publishing.
 
Distribution and Sales in the US: Part 1 by Michael Johnson is the first part of a three-guide report. Part 1 acts as an overview of the book distribution and sales marketplace in the United States. Part 2 and Part 3 are also now available. Part 2 is intended as an overview of book distribution and sales activity in the United States and provides information on the physical and digital distribution of books and ebooks within certain key markets. Part 3 focuses on key conferences and strategies for success.
 
All market guides are free for eligible FRMAP and Mentoring program recipients. Market guides are also available for purchase on our website.

Visit our website to download your copy of the Spring 2014 digital edition of the Rights Canada catalogue and view the 68 titles from 28 Canadian publishers.

Print copies of the catalogue were available at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and at the London Book Fair and promotion of each title in the catalogue is currently happening on Twitter and Facebook.

Canadian Studies Flyers Available Online

Visit our website to download your copy of the 2014 digital edition of the Canadian Studies Flyers and view the 103 titles from 33 Canadian publishers.
 
We are currently distributing print and digital Flyers. Flyers were sent to the British Association for Canadian Studies, the Association for Canadian Studies in Ireland and the Canadian Studies Centre in Hungary. Flyers were available at the London Book Fair and will be available at Beijing and Frankfurt.

REGISTRATION FOR BEIJING 2014 STILL OPEN

Registration for the Canada Stand at the 2014 Beijing International Book Fair (August 27 to 31, 2014) is still open. The 2013 stand was busier than ever and attracted a number of potential Chinese partners. Livres Canada Books supports publishers on the stand by providing an interpreter, and promotional tools, including a Mandarin-English directory of Canadian exhibitors at the Fair and the Rights Canada catalogue. The exhibitor package also includes the services of a Chinese-language and cultural advisor who will provide publishers with an analysis of the potential of their titles for the Chinese market, assistance in scheduling meetings with Chinese colleagues before the fair, and translation into Mandarin of the “sell sheets” for 2 titles.
 
A pay-per-title option is available for publishers who cannot attend the fair in person.

BOLOGNA 2014

The 51^st edition of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair drew record numbers: 30,000 professionals (a 20% increase over last year) and 1,200 exhibitors from 74 countries attended. Eight publishers registered for the Canada Stand, including two who used the stand as a pied-à-terre for business meetings. In all, 30 Canadian publishers participated in the Fair.

Congratulations to Éditions de la Pastèque, winner of the prestigious Bologna Ragazzi Award and the Bologna Prize (BOP) for Best Children's Publisher of the Year in North America 2014.

A SUCCESSFUL LONDON BOOK FAIR!

The Canada Stand at the 2014 London Book Fair was fully booked with 13 exhibitors and many other Canadian publishers exhibiting on their own stand, their distributor’s stand or at the Rights Centre. The Stand was home to successful business meetings and a flux of international visitors. The High Commissioner for Canada hosted a reception for Canadian participants of the London Book Fair on April 7^th. For the third consecutive year, Livres Canada Books hosted a networking reception, generously sponsored by the Ontario Media Development Corporation, on the opening night of the fair, April 8^th. We invite you to take a look at some pictures from the Stand and the networking reception on our Facebook page. The 2014 London Book Fair said goodbye to Earl’s Court. The 2015 Fair will be held at Olympia and we look forward to seeing you all there.

BOOKS FROM THE RIGHTS CANADA CATALOGUE ATTRACT INTEREST OF FOREIGN PUBLISHER

Arkadas, a Turkish publisher, browsed the Rights Canada catalogue on the Canada Stand at the Bologna Book Fair and showed interest in The Ghosts of Smyrna published by TSAR Publications.
Livres Canada Books offered introductions and the two companies are now in contact.

TRADEWIND BOOKS SELLS RIGHTS

Tradewind Books has sold rights for Chinese Fairy Tale Feasts to Interlink Books in Massachusetts, USA, and for All Aboard for Dreamland to Chunjae Publishers, Korea.

The 2014 Canada Prizes

The Canada Prizes are awarded annually by the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences to the best scholarly books in the humanities and social sciences that have received funding from the Awards to Scholarly Publications Program (ASPP).
Winners are: Journey With No Maps: A Life of P.K. Page, by Sandra Djwa, published by McGill-Queen's University Press; Across the Aisle: Opposition in Canadian Politics by David E. Smith published by the University of Toronto Press; Jacob-Isaac Segal, 1896-1954 : Un poète yiddish de Montréal et son milieu by Pierre Anctil published by the Presses de l'Université Laval and Les chemises bleues : Adrien Arcand, journaliste antisémite canadien-français by Hugues Théorêt published by Éditions du Septentrion.
