New Webinar: Explore the Mexican Book Market

Mexico will be the Market Focus of the 2015 London Book Fair in April. What promise does this $938 million market hold for Canadian publishers? On Thursday, February 5th, explore the potential of the Mexican book market with host Piedad Sáenz, founder of literary agency Ladybooks. Building on more than seven years of publishing experience in South and North America, including work for a Canadian children’s publisher and Fondo de Cultura Economica, Piedad will present an overview of the market, information on selling rights into Mexico, and case studies of successes and failures in translation. Cost is $50 per participant. German Market Guide Consultants

Introduced to us by our friends at the Frankfurt Book Fair, Heinold, Spiller & Partner is a consulting firm specializing in the German market. Since 1995, Heinold, Spiller & Partner have been working with top publishing companies, helping to preparing them for the future of publishing in the German market.

Published for the first time, Selling Canadian Books in Germany will provide Canadian publishers with market information, including distribution channels, sales conditions, pricing, digital publishing and opportunities for Canadian publishers of a variety of genres in the market. This guide will be published in early 2015.

Scouting Mission to Turkey 

Livres Canada Books led a Scouting Mission to Istanbul to explore the Turkish publishing market. A delegation of four, including Executive Director François Charette, Carole Boutin (Groupe Librex/ANEL), John Yates (University of Toronto Press/APUC) and Judy Brunsek (Owlkids Books/ACP) travelled to Istanbul November 8-12, 2014 to meet key players in the industry and visit the Istanbul Book Fair. In all, the delegation attended more than 40 meetings. In addition, the delegation also gave a presentation on the Canadian book market to over 15 Turkish publishers.

Livres Canada Books will publish a report (available in French and English) on the potential of the Turkish market for Canadian publishers. The report will be available free of charge on our website in the spring of 2015.


Last Chance for Rights Canada registration!

Registration for the Spring 2015 Rights Canada catalogue closes this Friday, December 5th. This is your last chance to list titles in Canada’s collective rights catalogue.

Prices are $110 for a repeat listing (title advertised in a previous edition of Rights Canada) and $145 for a new listing.

Canadian Studies Collection Registration Opens Soon

Registration for Livres Canada Books’ 2015 Canadian Studies Collection opens on December 8th. The Collection promotes Canadian books on or about Canada with a focus on titles of interest to the international community of Canadianists, librarians, and academics.

Start combing your front and backlist for titles to feature in the Collection and keep an eye on your inbox for your invitation to register.

Canada Stand


Our invitation to register for the Canada Stand at the 2015 Frankfurt Book Fair (October 14 – 18, 2015) will be released shortly. For 2015, the Canada Stand be will be exhibiting from a new location in Hall 6. Livres Canada Books is committed to securing the best possible location for the Canada Stand, providing maximum visibility for participating publishers and their titles. In the meantime, details can be found on the fair's website.

The 2015 London Book Fair invitation has been released. The 2015 Fair will take place at the new Olympia location from April 14 to 16, 2015. The Canada Stand will feature a brand new look and will be located in a key position at the new venue. Stand space is limited and is reserved on a strict first come, first served basis. We currently have 1 pied-à-terre spot available.

Bologna Ragazzi Award – Special Category
Exhibitors at the 2015 Bologna Children’s Book Fair are invited to submit titles published in the last five years to be considered for the Bologna Ragazzi Award.  Submissions are welcome in a broad range of subjects, including biodiversity, food, hunger, abundance, nutrition, safety and cooking.  Selected and awarded titles will be exhibited at the Biblioteca Salaborsa in the heart of Bologna during the fair, and after, in Milan as part of the Biodiversity Park.

2015-2016 FRMAP and Mentoring Application Guidelines and Forms Available Soon

Application guidelines and forms for FRMAP and the Mentoring - Funding Support program for 2015-2016 will be posted on our website before the holiday break. The application deadline for both programs is April 1, 2015. We remind publishers that FRMAP claims for events and sales trips must be submitted no later than thirty calendar days after the event or trip for which the claim is made. Claim and Activity Report forms are available on our website.

2014-2015 Mentoring - Funding Support Final Reports

Guidelines and forms will be sent to publishers in February to assist in preparing final reports for the 2014-2015 Mentoring - Funding Support program. The deadline to submit reports is Friday, May 1, 2015.

Éditions de l’Isatis Nominated for Two Library of Ontario Awards!

Je suis riche! (Angèle Delaunois and Philippe Béha) was a finalist for l'Association des bibliothèques de l'Ontario-Franco’s prix Peuplier 2015Journal de guerre d'Emilio (André Jacob and Christine Delezenne) was a finalist for the Ontario Library Association reader’s choice Tamarac prize.

Coach House Books is celebrating three big poetry wins!

This month, Coach House celebrates the recognition of three of its recent poetry collections. David O’Meara’s latest book of poetry, A Pretty Sight, was awarded both the 2014 Arc Poetry Archibald Lampman Award and the Ottawa Book Award in the English fiction category. This year’s A.M. Klein Prize for Poetry went to Sina Queyras for her collection, MxT. Ken Babstock, whose most recent collection, On Malice, is published by Coach House Books, was awarded the Latner Writers' Trust Poetry Prize. The Latner Prize is one of Canada’s newest annual literary awards and recognizes a mid-career Canadian poet for their exceptional body of work.
