Global Affairs Canada (GAC) in collaboration with the Canada Council for the Arts, the Department of Canadian Heritage, the government of Québec and Livres Canada Books are finalizing the details for Canada's presence as guest of honor at the Havana Book Fair, February 9 to 19, 2017, to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary. A delegation of nearly 30 authors and publishers, supported by Canadian artists from a variety of backgrounds, will be highlighted in Cuba next month. Stay tuned for a recap of the event after the fair. 

Export Expertise

WEBINAR ON EXPORTING TO POLAND 

The guest country of honor at the 2017 London Book Fair, Poland is a significant rights market where translated titles make up 20% of all books published, with English being the leading original language, followed by French and German in 2015.

Livres Canada Books will host a free webinar on January 26th that will explore the Polish book industry and its opportunities as a potential export market for your books.

Fellowship Program for Publishers Interested in Attending the Reykjavik International Literary Festival

The Reykjavik International Literary Festival offers a fellowship program for publishers interested in attending the event. This year’s festival will take place from September 6 to 9, 2017. The application deadline is January 31st, 2017. For more information please see the festival’s website

SPRING 2017 RIGHTS CANADA CATALOGUE COMING SOON!

The Rights Canada catalogue is currently in production and will be available in February. The spring edition will include 43 titles and three advertisements from 22 publishers, and will be distributed at the London Book Fair and the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. Be sure to visit our website for a PDF download of the catalogue or join the Rights Canada mailing list to stay up to date on Rights Canada publication.

BOLOGNA CHILDREN’S BOOK FAIR 2017 – A FEW SPACES REMAINING – exciting discount compared to 2016

The Canada Stand at the 2017 edition of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair is nearly full with only a few spaces left. Please note that the fair will take place from April 3 to 7. Space is booked on a first-come, first-served basis. This year, the Canada Stand has merged with that of Québec Édition. To view the invitation and to register online, please visit our website.

BolognaRagazzi Award 
The BolognaRagazzi Award traditionally comprises four categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, New Horizons (dedicated to books from countries where children’s publishing is still developing) and Opera Prima (a prize for first-time authors and illustrators). Exhibitors at the 2017 Bologna Children’s Book Fair are invited to submit titles published in the last ten years. The 2017 Bologna Children’s Book Fair edition will dedicate a special Award to the “Art” theme: this competition is reserved for works dealing with the theme of art (picture books, monographs about artists, activity books).

The 2017 Bologna Children’s Book Fair is also pleased to announce its BolognaRagazzi Digital Award, which highlights innovation and excellence in children's digital publishing on a global level. The Award is designed to identify and promote the latest trends and developments in digital publishing. Participation is free and open to all publishers and developers of apps for children aged 2 to 15 years-old. Works can be submitted in any language or platform to either to the Fiction or Non-Fiction categories.

The deadline to submit your books for consideration to these awards is January 29th, 2017. For more information please contact the Bologna Ragazzi Award department.

BOP - Children's Publisher of the Year Prize
The Bologna Best Children’s Publisher of the Year Prize – BOP – acknowledges the most significant publishers in each of the six areas of the world: Africa, Central and South America, North America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. Established by Bologna Children’s Book Fair in partnership with AIE - Italian Publishers Association - the prize is awarded to those publishers who have most distinguished themselves for their creative and publishing excellence over the year, showing originality as well as professional and intellectual skills. The official awards ceremony on April 3rd, 2017 will afford widespread visibility in the print press and on social networks. The winning publishers will also have a dedicated showcase inside the Book Fair. Nominations must be from publishing houses that have especially distinguished themselves during 2016, and shall not include winners of the Bologna Best Children’s Publisher Prize for 2014, 2015 or 2016. The deadline for nominations is January 16th, 2017.

Application guidelines and forms for FRMAP and the Mentoring - Funding Support program for 2017-2018 will be available on our website in January. The application deadline for both programs is April 1st, 2017.
