Export Expertise

Delegation to TEL AVIV This MONTH

The Canadian delegation for the Scouting Mission to Israel departs this month to explore the Israeli book market. The four-member delegation that includes François Charette, Margie Wolfe of Second Story Press, Barbara Creary of Dominique et compagnie, and Philip Cercone of McGill-Queen’s University Press, will spend November 22 to 26 meeting with key industry players of this fascinating market. Following their return, the delegation will produce a detailed report of this market’s potential for Canadian publishers’ rights and distribution sales, which will be available for download on our website.

Meet our Market Guide Consultants

We are pleased to introduce you to our consultants for the upcoming revised market guide on China, and our new guide on Exporting English-language Academic and Scholarly Books.

We are delighted to once again be working with Robert E. Baensch for the 3rd edition of our China market guide. Robert is the President of the Baensch International Group with a special focus on international publishing, start-up, and turnaround management. His varied career in publishing includes positions at Rizzoli International Publications, the American Institute of Physics, Macmillan Publishing, Springer Verlag New York, and Harper & Row Publishers. He has been widely recognized for his contributions and knowledge on the Chinese market. Most recently, China’s State Administration for Press, Publications, Radio, Film and Television awarded him the 9th Special Book Award for fifteen years of developing and presenting management training programs for the Chinese publishing industry.

We are also pleased to announce that Peter Milroy will be our consultant for the guide on Exporting English-language Academic and Scholarly Books. Peter has worked in book and periodical publishing for over forty years, most prominently as the director of UBC Press. He also served as president of the Canadian Publishers Council Education Group, the Association of Canadian University Presses, and the Association of American University Presses. In 2013 he set up Chapel Green Communications, a publishing consultancy whose recent projects have included work for the Association of Canadian Publishers, eBound Canada, SaskBooksUniversity of Manitoba Press, and the International Development Research Council.

Both guides will be available in early 2016.

We are now registering titles for the 2016 Canadian Studies Collection. The Collection promotes Canadian non-fiction on or about Canada with a focus on titles of interest to the international community of Canadianists, librarians, and academics.

Registration fees are $110 per title listed. Deadline for registration is November 20, 2015.

Canada Stand

LIvres Canada Books at the Guadalajara Book Fair

For the first time since 2003, Livres Canada Books will be hosting a Canada Stand at the Guadalajara Book Fair from November 28 to December 6, 2015. The Guadalajara International Book Fair is the most important publishing event in Ibero-America. Some 1,945 exhibitors from 44 countries and 20,300 international publishing industry professionals are expected to attend the 29th edition of the fair in 2015. A few spots remain available on the stand for exhibitors.

London Book Fair 2016 – REGISTER NOW 

The 2016 London Book Fair (April 12 to 14, 2016) is now open for registration. The Canada Stand will feature a new location on the ground floor of the Olympia Exhibition Centre in the general trade section, neighbouring the American collective stand. Stand space is limited and is reserved on a first-come, first-served basis. To view the invitation and to register online, please visit our website.


Keep an eye out for our invitation to exhibit on the Canada Stand at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, which is taking place from April 4 to 7, 2016.

Frankfurt Book Fair 2016  

In the coming days, we will be sending a survey to collect your feedback on the 2015 Frankfurt Book Fair. We are already in discussion with the Fair and your feedback will be valuable in determining our location and services for 2016. In the meantime, we will be communicating our intention to participate in next year’s Fair; therefore, the invitation can be expected shortly. The next Frankfurt Book Fair takes place from October 19 to 23, 2016.

USA 2016 Mentoring Program

The Mentoring – Coaching program will focus on the US book market for 2016. This program is designed to give beginning exporters actionable market intelligence on publishing conditions in the United States. Eligible publishers receive an expert assessment of their list’s export potential for the US market and advice on how to increase that potential. The program is open to English-language and French-language publishers alike, but activities are offered in English. Look for application guidelines later this month. 

2015-2016 FRMAP and surplus redistribution

A surplus redistribution from the 2014-2015 FRMAP program will be issued this month along with reimbursements for 2015-2016 FRMAP claims that have been submitted to those who have returned their two signed copies of the Contribution Agreement distributed in October.

Ontario Library Association Forest of Reading Series Nominees

Congratulations to the following publishers for their OLA Forest of Reading nominations: Simply Read Books, Red Deer Press, Kids Can Press, Pajama Press, Coteau Books, Nimbus Publishing, Orca Book Publishers, Fitzhenry & Whiteside, Tundra Books, Annick Press, Second Story Press, and Groundwood Books. The winning titles will be announced at the Festival of Trees, taking place May 17–19 at Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre.
