Scouting Mission to Israel

Last month, Livres Canada Books led a Scouting Mission to Tel Aviv to explore the changing nature of the Israeli publishing market. A delegation of four, including Executive Director François Charette, Barbara Creary (Dominique et compagnie/ANEL), Margie Wolfe (Second Story Press/ACP), and Philip Cercone (McGill-Queen’s University Press/APUC), travelled to Tel Aviv November 22 to 26, 2015 to meet with key players in the industry.

Livres Canada Books will publish a report (available in French and English) on the potential of the Israeli market for Canadian publishers. The report will be available free of charge on our website in spring 2016.
 

Mexico Market Guide Consultant

We are pleased to introduce Javier Celaya, the consultant for our new market guide on Mexico. Javier is the CEO and founder of Dosdoce.com, a consulting firm specializing in the analysis of new technologies and trends in the cultural sector. Building on more than ten years of experience in the Mexican publishing market, Javier will provide Canadian publishers with information about a variety of opportunities for export to Mexico. Selling Canadian Books in Mexico will be published in early 2016.

Upcoming Report on Global Book Marketing

Following the success of last year’s digital guide on Using Audience-Centric Digital Marketing to Drive Global Book Sales, we are pleased to work again with Mike Shatzkin, Peter McCarthy and Jess Johns of the Logical Marketing Agency for our upcoming digital report, Global Book Marketing: Advanced Strategy and Tactics for Building International Book Campaigns. This report will build on the insights from last year’s guide on social media marketing and will delve into advanced tactics for international book discovery by introducing publishers to sophisticated digital marketing strategies, tactics, and tools essential for success in today’s global marketplace. This report will be available in both English and French and will be published in 2016.

New Webinar: Save-the-date!

Registration will be open soon for our professional development webinar on International Ebook Lending, which will take place in February. Organized in collaboration with eBOUND and Bibliopresto.ca, the webinar will help Canadian publishers navigate the process of stocking their ebooks in international libraries by introducing key vendors and territories, analysing libraries as a source of discoverability, and exploring various terms and pricing strategies.

Publishing Scotland - International Publishing Fellowship

Publishing Scotland’s International Publishing Fellowship is an excellent opportunity for international collaboration. Geared toward experienced publishers and agents, this Fellowship aims to:
  • Facilitate networking and partnership opportunities between international and Scottish publishers, agents and rights professionals, with a focus on building relationships
  • Create opportunities for buying and selling book rights, familiarising international bodies with the current writing and publishing scene in Scotland
  • Enhance business exposure and success for publishers within a context of cultural exchange, fostering new ideas and increased efficiency
The 2016 International Publishing Fellowship will take place over one week in August 2016, to coincide with the Edinburgh International Book Festival. To be considered for the Fellowship, you must register you interest by January 22, 2016. Please see the Publishing Scotland website for details and to register. Please note that Livres Canada Books is not involved in the planning of this Fellowship.

The 2016 Canadian Studies Collection is currently in production and will be available by the end of January. This year’s edition features 28 publishers with 74 titles on Canadian subjects to be promoted to Canadian Studies associations worldwide. FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR 2015 RECAP

It was a year of change for Canadian publishers at the Frankfurt Book Fair as publishers said goodbye to the English-language Hall 8 and exhibited on the new stand in Hall 6. While some felt the traffic had a marked decrease in the new hall, others welcomed the move to a more central location in the fairground. Livres Canada Books is currently in discussion with the Fair authorities to secure the best possible location for 2016.

FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR 2016 – INVITATION COMING SOON

Our invitation to register for the Canada Stand at the 2016 Frankfurt Book Fair (October 19 to 23, 2016) will be released shortly. The Canada Stand will be exhibiting in Hall 6; however, we will be in discussion with the Book Fair to secure the best possible location for the Canada Stand, providing maximum visibility for participating publishers and their titles. In the meantime, details can be found on the Fair's website.
 

LONDON BOOK FAIR 2016 – ONLY "pied-À-terre" space LEFT!  

The 2016 London Book Fair invitation has been released. The 2016 Fair will take place at the Olympia Exhibition Centre from April 12 to 14, 2016. The Canada Stand will be located in a new key position near the American collective stand. Stand space is limited and is reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.

BOLOGNA CHILDREN’S BOOK FAIR 2016 – REGISTRATION OPEN

Our invitation for the 2016 Bologna Children’s Book Fair has been released. It features all of the Canada Stand’s usual exhibiting options in order to meet your fair exposure needs. Space on the Canada Stand is booked on a first-come, first-served basis, so please register early.

Bologna Ragazzi Award – Special Category
Exhibitors at the 2016 Bologna Children’s Book Fair are invited to submit titles published in the last five years to be considered for the Bologna Ragazzi Award. This year’s special category is Disability. The deadline to submit your books for consideration is January 29, 2016. For more information, please visit the Fair’s website

2016-2017 FRMAP AND MENTORING APPLICATION GUIDELINES AND FORMS AVAILABLE SOON

Application guidelines and forms for FRMAP and the Mentoring - Funding Support program for 2016-2017 will be posted on our website in the coming weeks. The application deadline for both programs is April 1, 2016. We remind publishers that FRMAP claims for events and sales trips must be submitted no later than thirty calendar days after the event or trip for which the claim is made. Claim and Activity Report forms are available on our website.
 

2015-2016 MENTORING - FUNDING SUPPORT FINAL REPORTS

Guidelines and forms will be sent to publishers in February to assist in preparing final reports for the 2015-2016 Mentoring - Funding Support program. The deadline to submit reports is Friday, May 6, 2016.

2015 TD Canadian Children’s Literature Award

Winners of the TD Children’s Literature Award were announced last month. Comme des géants took home the French-language prize for Autobus by Marianne Dubuc. The following publishers were finalists for the award: Dominique et compagnie, Éditions de la Bagnole, Éditions les 400 coups, House of Anansi, Pajama Press, and Éditions de la Pastèque. Congratulations to you all!
